  • Hard News: Spin Spun,

Poneke has an interesting post on the original topic, which includes praise for a DomPost reporter who actually did go and get her own scoop.

'Delusional' might be a bit harsh, Russell, then again there might be one or two of us who think politicians have economic Messiah complexes and delusions of influence with monotonous regularity.

Much as I admire Obama's style, his "give everyone $250" policy is daft. It seems that everyone's solution involves cranking up the federal deficit some more, and worrying about inflation some other time.

Russell, can you get another case worker?

    I guess so.

I know for a fact that not everyone from Special Education shares her beliefs about mainstreaming, as you tell it.

The understanding and support for AS conditions is quite patchy. GSE in Wellington seems quite good, and you're probably completely out of luck in the regions.

Very happy to hear of the older boy's achievements, though. The mind is mysterious and wonderful.

    Hell yeah!

But anyway, it would be good to have the discussion of that post take place on the humans site, so anyone with a comment should feel free to make it there.

Give it a couple of years. One year to go and GWB will be forced to hand over to someone more sensible.

Like I said, after a quick look at the candidates' economic policies, I wonder if they're capable of sensible policy shifts.

If you're not retiring in the next 5 years, don't worry.

Yeah, I know. Perhaps someone should have pointed out same to the Herald's editors before they ran their panic story about the six-month-old KiwiSaver schemes.

(I would not like to be a middle-aged American right now, that's for sure.)

But I fear that my pension fund puts me in basically the same boat as them ...

But at some point one of the ABs called a Welsh player - a devout chapel goer - an extremely rude thing: the Welsh bloke looking pleadingly at his captain, who gave him a nod, and the guy let fly. The write up said something about the term - which was apparently unprintable - being "almost a term of endearment" in NZ but being a deadly insult in Wales.

The actual phrase was "Move over you Welsh bastard," which is almost affectionate here, but a terrible thing to call a decent churchgoing boy from the valleys.

Thanks Larry. I don't expect you to agree with me, of course. If I only associated with people who agree with me, I'd never see anything of some people ...

Peripherally relevant, from the Journz list:

The editor of the LA Times has been fired for refusing to cut newsroom budgets.

What the Tribune Group has done to that paper is just wrong. David Geffen and his chums should stop talking, reach into their pockets and buy back the Times before it's stuffed. It could be America's Guardian.

  • Hard News: Monster Weekend,

"Welcome to New Zealand. We say what we think in meetings, we swear a lot, and you can't sue us. Understand that and we'll get along fine."

I've interviewed Brent Hansen, the New Zealander who ran MTV Networks Europe for years, and he said that when he behaved like a New Zealander on meeting the American executives -- ie, spoke frankly and disagreed with his seniors when he felt they were wrong -- people were gobsmacked.

Before long, it was recognised as a virtue, and became the basis of a long and successful tenure with the company. He probably didn't swear so much, but the attitude that he was as good as his master did work out well for him.

  • Hard News: Monster Weekend,

I have a pretty foul mouth too, at times. I did lay off it a little some years ago when I came into the family room and found my then two year old daughter hammering away on her wooden peg toy, and saying, "Damn. Bug. Bug. Damn."

Fine coming out of my mouth, but somehow just wrong coming out of a two year old's mouth.

Try having a fiery, but literal-minded, AS teenager, who has perfected the vowel-less "fuck". As far as he's concerned, he's saying "f-ck!", so he's in the clear.

In the end it makes more sense to concentrate less on the words than on the tone and whether it's hurtful. Not easy, though ...
