half the problem is that once i wrap these humungous mitts around a tumbler of whisky or two it comes hard to tell if i'm niggardly or curmudgeonly.

I'm predicting that with each measure consumed you become less niggardly and more curmudgeonly.

You may test my hypothesis, but I expect any subsequent report to be peer-reviewed.

It would be niggardly of me not to point out, as a rule of thumb, that so many here provide material pertinent to the discussion at hand, as is usually the case.

Indeed. Members of the community are cordially invited to now come up with examples of words whose "wrong" meaning has become generally accepted through sheer currency in the language.

Or, knock off and have a drink.

OK, now you've lost me totally, and I've been following this thread closely until now.

It is so Friday afternoon ...

  • Hard News: Free Man,

I am tempted to agree wholeheartedly, but I assume this forum could be googled in the future!

Back when Muldoon was Prime Minister everyone claimed to have an SIS file. It was sort of fashionable.

FWIW, I've only met two people who worked for the SIS. They obviously didn't say much about their work, but they were both hellishly bright.

It does seem things went a little haywire with the whole War on Terror thing, but I think Tucker has emerged quite well from his big week. Hopefully he is making some improvements.

Anyway Michael, you get the picture; you were mistaken and you shouldn't have called Andrew (or whoever) a racist. Just say sorry.

Urban Dictionary is entertaining, but not a good place to look up the meaning of an actual word. Last time I checked, the definitions of the word "Maori" were pretty horrifying.

Kowhai. I guess I am of the generation that links our flag to all that we hold dear as a country...it symbolises who we are. I find it difficult, like many people over the age of 50 or 60, to hear of our flag being burnt. So I just wonder what values does Zaoui actually hold. He comes here wanting to live in freedom and yet despises the symbol of that freedom.

As Charles says, for goodness sake, he happened to be somewhere near where somebody else burned a flag. What was he supposed to do? Sprint through the crowd and tackle the perpetrator?

I understand your discomfort with it, but the right to burn the flag has been upheld by a New Zealand court as a matter of free expression under the Bill of Rights Act 1990.

That said, time has moved on, he seems to have distanced himself from his ex-colleagues who had turned nasty. The other odd thing the Herald reports is that Zaoui fears those ex-colleagues. If true that might explain the mystery of his wanting to leave Malaysia.

The on-the-record story about Malaysia relates to the visit of a senior Algerian security official, allegedly to observe Malaysian policing practices. Zaoui feared he was actually the subject of the visit. I'd be scared in his position.

I take it Whisky Galore are proud to support smart ass racists?

Michael: not for the first time, I'm asking you to pull your damn head in. Your comment is completely unwarranted and based on a faulty understanding of the meaning of the word and its derivation:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niggardly

Perhaps you could clear the air and apologise for baselessly accusing people of being racist.

I have a sad, near-empty bottle of Glenfarclas sitting at home right now. How lovely a replacement would be, and the 20th of the month is so far away...

If that was an attempt to ingratiate and win the comments prize, it has fallen so sadly short ...

Slander? With a little less respect Stephen I would point out that he has been convicted in two European democracies.

And as the Refugee Status Appeals Authority discovered, those convictions were examples of quite how badly the judicial systems of apparently civilised democracies can behave in the case of inconvenient foreigners.

Amnesty has an FAQ that covers all this.
