It's a tough thing for the record companies to get their head around, but if the charts are actually to measure what people are listening to, then in real terms the p2p downloads would be factored in. How you do it, I don't know, but it's an odd situation where 90% of song acquisitions don't count for a chart which is supposed to measure popularity.

There are a couple of companies in the US that compile just those statistics -- and the record companies do use them internally. But asking them to publish them as official charts is a wee bit of a stretch just yet, I think ...

With all due respect, you address envelopes and crowds.

    Que?

It would have been nice to have a little more intelligent discussion about this -- and kudos to Keith for his contribution -- but I think this is a little too important to be handing out gold stars for a good try, especially when Cullen's stock response to any concerns seem to be to wave his hankie and murmer 'poo poo'. Having said that, I'd really like Key and English to stop playing Cullen's spin game - of course they're not going to write and release their policy eighteen months from the election you fricking idgits, and Mike and Helen know why - and start leading that debate.

I'm not calling it a "good try", I'm calling it an era-defining achievement to have actually done something concrete about our problems with savings and the looming retirement bubble. I think it has taken political courage to do it.

Jeez, even today's Herald editorial is actually saying much the same.

Damn straight. Most NZ banks are Aussie owned and yet the bulk of their profits are derrived from NZ, not Australia. They be laughing.

Possibly even louder than, say, Fairfax is laughing about the money it sucks out of NZ to prop up the Australian Financial Review.

I'll make a prediction: National will go into the next election promising NOT to scrap "kiwisaver" (but odds-on to "fix" or "improve" it.)

Key was refusing to say this morning exactly what National's policy on KiwiSaver would be, but promised they'd have one before the election. And you're right: they'll mess with it at their peril.

And in 20 years it'll be considered a watershed. Along with the "Cullen fund" we'll look back on this govt as the ones who finally "fixed" retirement income- as well as running a dynamic economy and paying off govt debt.

Yes. Whatever he'll be seen to have got wrong, I think Cullen will be remembered for having the nerve to address both our savings and retirement issues.
