  • Hard News: Believe the Hype,

    I have done my duty and voted for Word of the Year--but what happened to "going forward"?

    Russell--can you slip Portishead 3 into your list?

    Yes, but how do we get a yellow mini into it too?

    Thanks for the tip, Graham. I was considering going to TDtheESS tomorrow but I am relieved now that I have avoided ruining my weekend.

  • Hard News: A news site where you can…,

    We chanced on Parliament TV last night (not our usual Programming of Choice) and I was impressed by the strength of debate from the Labour side--Pete Hodgson and Moana Mackey, in particular. It might be small comfort but there is something in now occupying the moral high ground.

    Are we also beginning to see the beginnings of the terrible fixes the Maori Party are getting into?

  • Random Play: Following The Songlines,

    I know what you mean, Graham. I am getting all the usual cliches (ie "music to cut your wrists to"; "music for depressives" etc) when I tell folk I am going to Cohen's Auckland concert. Difficult to get them to open up their minds a little.

    If I break a leg or get called away somewhere, I am happy to let you have my ticket. To date, however, I have every intention of getting to the Jan 22 concert.

  • Random Play: Feelin' Groovy . . . Happy Again,

    Praise be Chris Bourke! It has been great having him as the writer-in-residence at Waikato this year.

  • Hard News: They can see your house from here,

    I can see our house, perched high above the road, where Grey Street dips between Te Aroha Street and Hamilton East School. But the giant paulownia isn't there anymore--it died during the summer draught and now lies stacked, making an interesting pattern, against the garden wall. I counted more than 40 growth rings on the primary trunk, so it had a grand old life.

  • Hard News: They can see your house from here,

    Yes, Google--and the Web generally--is wonderful but my enthusiasm was dampened a little by a story in today's Media Guardian viz;

    "So what is the biggest story of the year? Ross and Brand in Sachsgate? The collapse of the financial system? The devastation in Mumbai? Or the US election perhaps. According to Yahoo, the most searched for subject on the internet in Britain this year is Britney Spears. Depressing! The remaining top five were Big Brother, The X Factor, Oasis and High School Musical 3. Only the US election made the Top 10, at No 6."

  • Hard News: Just Friday,

    Thank you, Philip. Someone needs to defend the Film Commission from know-nothings such as Coddington. It was interesting, for example, that John Barnett and John Maynard might have different takes on funding regimes but both believe in the cultural brief of NZFC. They had a very amicable debate about this at the SPADA conference.

  • Hard News: Just Friday,

    My favourite quote about statistics (well, I have several);

    "86% of all statistics are made up on the spot" (Vic Reeves)

    "If one foot is in a bucket of ice water and the other is in a bucket of boiling water, on average, you can be quite comfortable" (anon)

    "According to statistics, in 1998 there were 318,000 women in the UK who said they were engaged to be married and 218,000 men who said they were engaged to be married" (anon)
