Other TV news: 3 or 4 weeks into the new season, Nip/Tuck this week moves to Monday @ 10:30, for some reason.

Shortland St.: Why do they always shake hands with their left hands recently? What's with that?

  • Radiation: It had a dog,

    I/O,
She won't hand it over because the guy's a bullying scumbag, and she refuses to bow to that. Obviously, that movie comes from the tail end of the 'Old Hollywood' era, but I'd say it's notable for not falling prey to many of the cinematic horrors that that implies (pointless gargantuanism, meaningless sentimentality, musicals - yuck!). I saw it about 20 years ago and again on One recently and, while it's not perfect, it's pretty tight, pretty tense, and IMO still very watchable though, being 40 years old, unsurprisigly a bit old-fashioned.

Scorcese, Coppola, etc. obviously did look at what Hollywood was doing in the late '60s and say "this could be done better" (and then *did* do it much better), but the other side of the coin is that within a decade the film school crew had invented "blockbusters" and, creatively, Hollywood's been mostly complete shit ever since.

PS. Life don't make sense; why should films? ;)

  • Hard News: The meaning of a Banana,

Consider Fuckwit-Am... sorry, Irish-Americans and their often so-simplified-it's-bullshit view of Ireland and their largesse directed at the IRA...

    @ rogerd,
You went too far. I must insist that you retract this statement, not for your political views (it's a very glib reading of the historical situation, but each to his own), but for the insulting language used. That’s all, and we can call it quits.

    @ others,
I don’t want to have this thread hijacked too much with this issue. I freely acknowledge that some of what has been discussed here could make my complaint seem somewhat precious by comparison, but fuck it, we’re talking about racism on this thread and his comment is an insult to my family and friends which I can’t leave unchallenged.

    Graeme,
Correct. Misunderstanding on my part (due to extreme overwork), so that point withdrawn, though:

Why was Dewar allowed to even testify at the second trial if his evidence had been compromised [in the first]?

    seems like a valid point.

  • Hard News: Evil,

Just to play devil's advocate for a sec., I can't help thinking that Dewar, guilty or not, never had a chance. You know what people (ie jury members) are like; "Well, *someone* ought to pay for this mess".

Secondly, isn't it the judges job to rule that inadmissable evidence is... well, inadmissable? Will he or she be censured?
