  • Hard News: The Wall and the Paper, in reply to Paul Williams,

Honestly, how’s a complete prat like him ever attain any standing? It is beyond my comprehension

Name recognition, pure and simple. He kept his complete prattishness well disguised until he went off with Winston. After that, he was electable anywhere, as the burghers of Whanganui found out. Even crap can create its own momentum.

Watching the local government election from the inside last year was both educational and unnerving. Some of the people elected are absolute morons, and they've been getting elected for years, purely because people now know their names. It's the first time that's the hardest.

that man should be advising govt

He regularly does. It's just that government doesn't listen.

We seriously didn’t have a lot of choice at the time – his anxiety was through the roof, really alarming.

Oh, I know. It's a bugger of a thing - can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em. I'm glad he's finding a path that works for him.

we’ve been able to carefully work down his SSRI dosage by two thirds.

That’s so good to hear. They’re vicious buggers long term, and the side effects can make you wonder if it's worth it at all. I was on paroxetine for a looooong time. Not fun. Now moved onto an SNRI called venlafaxine – has its own issues, but seems to be doing the job. Mostly.

It’s such a lucky dip, though, the way the doctors prescribe. “We know something is wrong – let’s try this and see if it helps!” FFFFUUUUU….

I mean, I love my GP and all, but I really wish they could be more precise.

    /me waves to Leo.

Is that a symposium on philosophy or do all symposiums lead to bullshit?

I think Stephen's point is that all symposiums are about drinking.

Definitely moving to low rise inner suburbs would appeal to NZers, not just foreigners more accustomed to super high density living

Big assumption, there. This is one NZer to whom it would not appeal at all, and I know plenty of others. We wouldn’t be living where we are, if it did. If it was the only choice, it might be acceptable, but that’s a long way from appealing. The desire for a bit of land that the kids can grow up on seems strong still. [ETA] And I don't even have kids.

If we’re all going to be held to account for our thoughts, rather than deeds, we’re pretty much screwed as a species.

[ETA I'm less impressed by Goff trying to weasel out of it than by his original comment, but he shouldn't have said it either.]
