  • Island Life: The World Is Full of Cu*ts,

St Francis & the blessing of animals happened last month, normally gets a human interest story on TV, pet lambs, dogs, etc. Anglicans & Catholics do this - great fun for the kids.

In their arid and pitiably limited theology, orthodox Anglicans and Catholics deny the possibility of souls to animals. It's no surprise to have it confirmed that the 'blessing' of a few token creatures is little more than pandering to the media.

Could you clarify what your gripe is, if you in fact have any, with the sign outside of that church in Carcassone?

Speaking for myself, the bit about no animals. Once you restrict the possibility of having a soul to the potentially monied, you reveal your religion for the racket it is.

Jeremy Pope is an anti-corruption crusader and travel writer and is an officer of the NZ Order of Merit

Thanks for that, the things you learn at PAS. I found stuff in the Mobil guide about the area I grew up in that I wish I'd known back in the day.

I did a proper tutting and shaking of my head then went and got dinner and then I walked home.

Ah good on you. Like little Mr. Camopants who haunts my neighbourhood - you should see him do his balls down at the BP ATM when his benefit hasn't come through - the guy'll have a case manager to micromanage his excesses. I'm sure you realised that if you'd written a stiff letter to Bob Parker you'd have got something useless, like a voucher for a free ride on the Port Hills gondola.

BTW, have to agree 100% with your earlier take on the prolapsed CBD.

    . . . worship a giant owl . . .

Like, Bohemian Grove style? Now that you mention it, there are an awful lot of stately redwoods around.

. . . nowhere else in New Zealand have I encountered the sheer casual racism and homophobia of Christchurch.

In the six years I've lived here I've never once heard any of those nasty sneers about Helen Clark's marriage. Unfortunately not so in Auckland and Wellington, and from people that I'd have expected to know better. When you know the lie of the land, you know who to avoid engaging with.

OK, we get it - ChCh PAS readers all live within a suburb or two of the Uni, and gee there are some great noodle houses around now...

    Demonstrably pretentious bullshit. On stilts.

st ephen & Keir Leslie - you've articulated it.
Which is why almost all of mine, and me, have left the place.

Worst thing about Christchurch? The orgy of fear-and-loathing self-congratulatory smugness that the mere mention of the place provokes. So Keir saw a swastika tatt when visiting a city of 375,000-odd souls and had to have a wee lie down afterwards? The poor dear.

Islander pefers the Rousseauian swamps of a dubious yesteryear to the continued existence of thousands of her fellow citizens, regardless of their potential to make this world a better place? Have fun, but don't expect to be taken seriously.

So yes - there are nasty racists up and down the country. But stabbing an Afghani taxi driver is such a quintessential Christchurch crime. I think it’s because it’s only in Christchurch that the notion of a hierarchy with white English-bred people on top has been so blatantly nurtured for decades by the local middle-class and media. It’s no wonder that the more bone-headed citizens seek to cement their own place in that hierarchy by picking on victims who are decidedly “other”. They just want to be loved.

Perhaps you'd like to apply your talent for incisive generalisation to the case of the schoolgirl who was abducted from Eastgate mall and raped by a Samoan who'd recently arrived in the country. She wasn't, as far as I'm aware, his only victim, and despite being a promising student the trauma of her experience drove her to suicide. While she wasn't Samoan herself, a number of her schoolfriends were. The way the kids involved have dealt with the tragedy has been a humbling thing to witness.

Do you know where you can get a decent Rendang that does not look and taste like an Indian curry?

Afraid I'm a vego, so can't really help there. The years I spent living within walking distance of the esteemed Istana in Freemans Bay rather spoiled me for NZ attempts at masakan Indonesia.

  • Up Front: White in Brighton,

@Joe It has been great to see Riccaton turning into our very own China/Korea town. I can finally get some Soju and vege dumplings at decent prices whenever I want!

Wouldn't know about that, Riccarton never did it for me but whatever rocks your boat. If you're into the local cuisine of your present listed whereabouts though, you'll understand something of how pleased I am to find a regular supply of ketjap asin at Cash & Carry in Cashel Street, just round the corner from Fitzgerald Ave.
