  • Island Life: I am curious. Yellow?,

Interestingly, the local city council part owns the Taieri Gorge Railway, and fully owns the Dunedin station building.

Here in Dunedin, cruise liners dock at Port Chalmers, and a train (remember them?) run by the Taieri Gorge Railway brings the passengers to Dunedin railway station - one of the architectural wonders of the country.

D4J is not, unfortunately, Cameron Slater (such a wonderful name....ever seen the New Scientist back page columns about nominative determinism?). D4J is a fellow named Peter, who lives in Rolleston.

  • Hard News: When that awful thing happens,

One of the unfortunate consequences of the publics' increased access to the media, is that we have to listen to and read rubbish produced by those who in past times would only have had their friends to bore.

A former railway line like the the Central bike trail is great...trains don't cope with steep inclines, so there are no awful hills to climb. An all new bike trail, though - will it be routed to avoid hills? The Central bike trail works because anyone with a reasonable level of fitness can ride it.

On National Radio this morning, there was an interview with a textile worker from Oamaru, who is working a 9 day fortnight. He says the provisions for this were already in his employment contract.

  • Hard News: Rethinking the EFA,

Ahh....Dunedin. I must admit that after living near Auckland (in Helensville, of all places...) for 25 years that it's great to live less than 5 minutes from where I work......and I can park free 2 minutes walk away. The post election interviews with the local papers' voter panels only had one national supporter..against 2 green and 3 labour supporters! Mind you....I don't think the locals want aucklanders here in great numbers....but they are happy to hear that someone who grew up in the place is glad to return.

  • Hard News: Prospects,

If teachers don't want national testing, start organising now.....have 80% to 90% willing to refuse to carry it out, when it is introduced. Introduce National to a little civil disobedience.
