  • Up Front: Absence of Malice,

Anyone here read his "Wayleggo"? (Think that's the title, temporarily unable to access library.)

This? Great guy, great writer, great read.

  • Hard News: Believe the Hype,

They're part of a string of bands he calls "American bullshit punk", coming thick and fast out of that country.

There was a term in the 90s, "punk cabaret". Examples: Green Day, The Presidents of the United States.
I remember driving by the Sydney Showground one night and noticing more SUVs than I'd ever seen in my life. Every one had a parent behind the wheel, waiting to pick the kids up from the Presidents' Hordern Pavilion show.

  • Hard News: The Flashing Question Mark,

Joe, old Macs are beautifully retro. I love the fish tanks and such that people make out of them. They're like old Volkswagons. I never wanted one at the time, and I sure don't want one now, but I still think they look pretty cool.

There was an episode of Married With Children where the son tells his bimbo sister that he's getting a computer. To which she replies "What colour?" Once the second-generation iMacs appeared the joke was lost.

Shortly after you couldn't find a plain vanilla beige mouse at the Warehouse - they were all fruity and semi-transparent.

  • Hard News: The Flashing Question Mark,

But I can see that Apple make very nice machines nonetheless.

Old Mac do look rather lame once they're truly obsolete. Even St. Vinnies weren't too wild about taking my 90s Quadra. That said, any Mac made in the last decade is too good to toss out. A young female relative is using the iMac I bought back in 2000 every day. Apparently it's just fine for Facebook.

  • Hard News: Essay Question,

Even getting flamed by RB has the tedious predictability of reading a hundred thousand haiku in a row.

An experience that onetime poetry editor Richard Allen described as "like being nibbled to death by goldfish".
Apparently the original Sid Vicious was an albino hamster given to mistaking fingers for food. It's probably testimony to DPF's gentle pet-keeping tendencies that Kiwiblog serves RB as a exercise wheel.

  • Hard News: Essay Question,

One thing, though- has anyone here met the poster who calls himself "Redbaiter"?

Think I knew him when he was a kid. You couldn't wish to meet a sweeter guy. Utterly convinced that he was the antichrist, promisied no more school and unlimited boiled lollies for all once he got to run the world. Shattered to the core when he realised he wasn't. You've seen the results.

  • Cracker: Sole Man,

    You're amused

By what - Muntazar al-Zaidi's actions? If you must know, I admire his apparent courage - insofar as I'm able to understand the situation that gave rise to it. At east I'm trying, rather than delivering snottily schoolmarmish lectures on colonial protocol.

Stack the sanctimony as high as you please, as far as I'm concerned your silly fantasies about tossing slingbacks, mules, mukluks or whatever at sundry Iranians are self-serving and irrelevant tosh.
