  • Hard News: Who Guards the Guardian?,

a tangential post perhaps – The Guardian ran this story a while ago about the NSA sharing intelligence with Israel.

The disclosure that the NSA agreed to provide raw intelligence data to a foreign country contrasts with assurances from the Obama administration that there are rigorous safeguards to protect the privacy of US citizens caught in the dragnet. The intelligence community calls this process “minimization”, but the memorandum makes clear that the information shared with the Israelis would be in its pre-minimized state.

But the New York Times’ failure to follow up on this story, has set some editors there at loggerheads.

Many Times readers have been writing to me for several days about a story The Guardian broke last week, describing how the United States routinely shares with Israel intelligence information that the National Security Agency gathers on American citizens….
… After a weekend in which no mention was made in The Times of the article, I asked the managing editor, Dean Baquet, about it on Monday morning.
He told me that The Times had chosen not to follow the story because its level of significance did not demand it
“I didn’t think it was a significant or surprising story,” he said. “I think the more energy we put into chasing the small ones, the less time we have to break our own. Not to mention cover the turmoil in Syria.”…
…I disagree, however, with Mr. Baquet’s conclusion on this one. I find it to be a significant development and something that Times readers should not have to chase around the Web to find out about. They should be able to read it in The Times.

  • Hard News: The Crazy Gang Nation,

    soul on ice...
Apparently Lockheed Martin say they'll run out of money by mid October!!! - so they're thinking of closing McMurdo Base and the Deep Freeze operation in Chchch - I'd have thought that would cost them way more than keeping it open - but then again they can probably bill the NSF (National Science Foundation) for mothballing and reopening costs - and not use any of their own billions of dollars profit, made mostly from the US Government...

    Nature has more details.

I wonder if NASA astronaut Marsha Ivins will still be allowed to speak in Chchch on the 9th and Tekapo - at the inaugural Aoraki Mackenzie Starlight Festival on from October 11 to 13 ?

She is retired, but who knows what that crazy gang nation will do - right?
I hear they kept the golf course Obama plays on, open...

  • Cracker: Lundy and Me., in reply to Damian Christie,

    Clue-doh!

I guess I’m saying it’s never been regarded as a contentious fact in the whole thing

    Ta for the clarification.
As a DA*, I'm not trying to refute the evidence per se, just feeling out the parameters of possibility - and I guess I'm influenced by all those movies and books where phones are used at a remove (auto dialling/answering, taped together, all that kinda devious spy stuff) - usually where there are fixed processes, there can be work-arounds... with or without human agency.
Probably a lot easier to do now than in 2000, admittedly...

    What if...
Another scenario for both the Bain and Lundy murders (and maybe even the Crewes) - could there be the possibility of a totally disassociated person (in all senses of the word) involved in them - a homicidal stranger passing thru...
    - ie someone and something completely random - with other 'evidence/facts' getting in the way... signal to noise, and all that.
    - Lundy's tools used? - found on site and used by person(s) unknown
    - Bain's gun - found on site, and used by person(s) unknown
Just because someone can be shown to have reasonable cause/ weight of circumstance, etc - doesn't preclude them from not doing it.
I know, fanciful, but has to be one end of the continuum of possibilties, doesn't it?

I am of course not hampered by, nor privy to, the whole gamut and minutiae of evidence presented in the trials...

the ring of truth… or verisimilitude?

Actually it’s based on two telephone calls he’s confirmed to have made connected to those cell towers

    ah, the meta data –
    did talking take place?
    (ie corrorborated conversation)
    do we know the content?

    or was there just connections?
    – where would one find that info?
    In precis preferably…
    :- )

Edit: in light of the times given, perhaps there was a way to make the later call, without physically being there - would depend on whether a conversation took place, I guess - just speculating here...

(Residents there included Brigitte Unwin, who went on
to found Piko Wholefoods in Christchurch.)

Was she there well before you were?
Piko was started in 1979... (March 4th)
by a co-operative formed by the Otakaro Land Trust
Rod Donald was very instrumental in this... Not to say that Brigitte wasn't as equally involved, just sayin'...

Thus the whole “his phone was connected to this cell tower” argument was less convincing to me.

...and surely, all that indicates is that his phone was in that cell tower's range, it's not surgically attached to him, nor is it accused of anything...

    Solved by the old bill...?
What a shame there were no smart electricity meters back then, or something that could tell what power was used in the house and when - just a passing thought...
