• Hard News: Rain on his parade,

Queen Street is public property, any of us have every right to be there.

You'd think that was the case, and it's certainly the case in England, where there is a legal concept of a public right of way.

However I'm not sure about NZ, and maybe Graeme Edgeler (sp?) has an opinion. I know Rotorua council were trying to trespass people out of "their" city centre, which implies that the streets are private property of the council, and we only use them at their discretion.

• Hard News: Listen to the Music,

Can I also pimp a post by Matthew Holloway on the Wellington curry list, since I know a lot of artists and creators are here?

This concerns the ACTA treaty, currently being secretly negotiated by MED - this will, if passed in its current form, allow any content owner to search and monitor systems for copyright material *without a court order*. In other words, bug your Internet to see if you've got a pirated Metallica song on there (and if you haven't, well, move on).

Here's the email:

As most of you are well aware ACTA is a nasty bit of law that's being
negotiated right now by MED. For those unfamiliar there's write-up
here,

http://bronwyn.co.nz/

So the IT community are well represented (by InternetNZ, and Mark
Harris) on ACTA but they're only part of it, and what influenced MED
in the past was artists speaking up. So we're going through the steps
of talking to artists and if you know any you might want to forward
that link to bronwyn.co.nz to them. The more artists speaking up
against this (particularly well known ones) the better -- so please do
your bit to help out :)

• Hard News: Listen to the Music,

Minor admin note: I'm on a temporary computer this morning with IE6, and a page with no comments renders really wierdly with a huge white space. In case the maintainers wanted to know

Anyways, I though Ladyhawke had great energy, which is probably what's driving their success. I still love the advert Suede placed before acquiring Bernard Butler (I think I have this right):
No musos. Some things are more important than talent

• Up Front: They Have the Best Rides,

I see a few parallels here with the (mis-)categorisation of drug users as chaotic social dropouts.

• Hard News: Trust. Us.,

It sounds like a very good idea. A weekly newsmagazine would have the advantage of not needing to meet a daily deadline (needing print capacity, plus journalists up half the night to fill that space).

• Hard News: Rain on his parade,

for a guy to actually go a watch/leer at it is, well, rather crass.

Same. When I went to BM last year I lent my (wonderfully customised) bike out to a friend for CT. I wasn't going to go, but some (male and female) friends encouraged me. Then the bike I borrowed got a flat tyre. Then the duststorm hit.

• Hard News: Rain on his parade,

I spelled it out pretty damn clearly in an email to the Mayors office and to McCoskrie in response to a reply to an earlier email from both.

I wonder what their legal advice was.

Interestingly, if in the UK councillors go against advice and pursue a course that's ultra vires, they can be personally surcharged for the cost. I don't think that happens here?

• Hard News: Rain on his parade,

Tolerance has to be for stuff we don't like (obnoxious fat pornographers who might even be closet Libertarians) as well as stuff that we like.

I see that the police are trying to supress the Undy 500 rally - despite the fact that, if the driver remains sober and the road rules are complied with, students are perfectly entitled to drive from Christchurch to Dunedin and have a party.

It's all about context, anyway. http://www.criticaltits.com/ will be on for the 13th time at Burning Man next week. Hopefully the dust storms will stay away.

• Southerly: Primary School for Beginners,

Bah looxury!

Mrs Pinochet in 1st year used to tie recalcitrant kids to the ceiling fan and put it on spin. After she did this to Fatty Boothroyd and the ceiling fell down, they punished us kids by setting fire to the rubble of the classroom with us still in it.

The fifth years used to bury the younger kids up to their necks on the rugby pitch and then lop their heads off with a machine not unlike the one in Caligula (1999 remake).

Plus, when Tonks Minor sung off-key in assembly, Mr Torquemada had him burnt at the stake in front of the whole school.

You kids had it easy!
