  • Island Life: Tear down this wall.,

    Totally.

Cubes go with this uncommunicative culture where people are locked away from access. It used to be that you rang an office and somebody would pick up and tell you where the person you wanted had gone. Now it's voicemail in many cases, especially in the US.

  • Hard News: Just marketing to the base,

I disagree with everything Grant posted, but isn't it just the overt policy of ACT and the covert views of a lot of National supporters?

I don't fully understand the whole "troll" concept, at least insofar as for people posting sincerely held views. Is the idea that one should only "debate" from a position of broad agreement with the general leaning of a forum?

  • Southerly: Primary School for Beginners,

I believe that even in primary schools there are some very difficult situations which would try the patience of a saint..

Some American teachers can now deal with this by packing heat.

I wonder if they are allowed to just blaze away at recalcitrant kids, or if they convene a firing squad during the next assembly.

  • Up Front: Not Such a Hard Word After All,

    Veitch has just been charged.

I suspect that any "settlement" is unenforcable. You can't enforce a contract that involves breaking the law.

  • Hard News: A bit tacky, no?,

Oh, Lord, George - she goes hiking and cross-country skiing.

She climbed on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aconcagua. I'd call that quite serious for somebody in their 50s with a day job.

Certainly more adventurous than drinking wine in a corporate box at Eden Park.

  • Hard News: The newest neocon catastrophe,

It is a good idea to put these in the hands of the Georgians to reduce the viability of any Russian occupation.

Yeah, brilliant scheme. You don't think they might sell them on at all, e.g. to anybody who feels like shooting down airliners?

  • Hard News: The newest neocon catastrophe,

Aren't the Russians being neocons too in their own way? Seeking to achieve your desired economic / security situation by military bullying would be my definition of a neocon foreign policy.

  • Hard News: The newest neocon catastrophe,

Try that in most of Europe and see what happens..

The fans mingle at rugby games in Europe as well. At least, they do at Twickenham. It's only soccer where the girly goings on on the field force the spectators to overcompensate.

  • Speaker: It’s Beijing, but not as…,

"when will Chinese get the vote", I see no advantages. Why introduce a hurdle every 3 or 4 years to impair implementation of long term vision?

    I'm sold.

In NZ, we've got this expensive and distracting election coming up to elect a new government that will just tweak around and distract from the need for a long term vision.

What we need to have is a national government with esteemed national figures: Jim Bolger, Colin Meads, Paul Holmes, Don Brash, Eric Watson, Brian Tamaki. All working together to do what's best for us with none of those petty distractions of western-style democracy.

We could all elect leaders from an approved list for our suburbs and villages. The best of those could be chosen to serve at council level, and so on up to the Peoples Parliament. Our leaders would be able to choose strong, independent voices to run the media and television with none of the quibbling we have today.

I'm confident that with such a system we could win the rugby and get to stage the 2025 Olympics.

believe that Communism will pass too

Didn't it pass about 20 years ago? I don't think any aspect of the Chinese system would be recognised by Marx or Lenin as Communism (or even Socialism).
