  • Hard News: Be the party of good science,

The key idea underlying an ETS or any market mechanism is "polluter pays". National and the Maori Party have reversed that to "pay polluters".

I can see "corporate welfare" written all over the whole deal.

Cue this photo, or this photo. Caption: "This is what your tax dollars are subsidising."

  • Hard News: Undie Wankers,

I wonder whether they'll have another crack at the undie 500 next year. If they do I imagine that it will be a lot more like the real Cannonball Run with the Police actually bothering to stop them instead of pointing them in the right direction to Dunedin...

Would the cars still hold together in one piece?

Tom B: Again it brings to mind the Listener article, "The unbearable lightness of being English".

    3410:

But it can also lead to a desire to hide the actual problems from sight in order to preserve a good image .

    Nicky Hager's next exposé, methinks?

  • Hard News: Be the party of good science,

Would NZers have reacted any differently if the light bulb policy was imposed from abroad, for instance by the American Clean Energy & Security Act or Euro Union standards?

  • Hard News: The roof was on fire,

    Craig:

"A sustained case of Gay Panic", apparently. And I thought I was badly dressed because I just didn't give a twopenny fuck. I'll just leave my toaster oven out by the letterbox, because its one sleep 'til Melbourne -- and I'll be shopping for second-hand books and a new cardie.

    Lucy:

(That'd be an interesting national motto, wouldn't it? "New Zealand: We Know How To Look Good, We Just Don't Give A Fuck".)

When in doubt, wear black all year round. Seems to work for Wellingtonians - and Melburnians, for that matter.

  • Up Front: Disunited,

Paul Graham has already done the hard yards on why I won't be attending a high school reunion anytime soon. More specifically, why I won't be attending a high school reunion at a well-known 'ivy league' college in the Garden City that I had the misfortune of being grinded and shredded through in the mid-1990s.

  • Hard News: America: Chill out!,

    Richard C:

As I see it from a business/economic perspective, a well-run public health system is a net benefit to the business sector. It keeps the workforce healthy and removes risk around insurance premium hikes for employees. A healthcare system is as much a part of good economic infrastructure as roads, rail, fibre optic cables and anti-corruption legislation..

Too right. The biggest inefficency in American industry isn't the UAW or the Teamsters. Rather, it's the handbrake of employee healthcare & pension costs that industries in other countries - with universal healthcare - don't have to meet.

Deliberately weaken the public health system in NZ (and other countries for that matter), and it could well backfire in the form of American-style H&P insurance demands.

  • Hard News: The conversation they want to…,

One was the neo-Nazis, and the others were the men's rights groups. The latter appeared to be the most immune to reason.

More, or less, immune to reason than these nutbars?

  • Hard News: The conversation they want to…,

On a complete tangent, Rod Oram confirmed his status as a national treasure at LATE on Thursday night. If only more people would listen.

    Anyone got a transcript?

  • Hard News: The next bylaw will ban irony,

And it looks like the kind of people favouring the gang patch ban are also the same kind of people lambasting hate-speech law as thought crime. Even the Maxims think the gang patch law is ineffectual.
