  • Hard News: In the Game,

I am reminded of this wonderful quote that there is nothing like a bit of OE (usually further than Oz) being good for the soul:

And accessible broadband is the next best thing.

For all its multiculturalism, French language still seems to be a bone of contention in Canada, apparently more so than Maori language in NZ.

  • Discussion: Closer to Home?,

The amount of public works that went into Sydney before the Olympics was staggering- yet NZers bitched and moaned and couldn't get their shit together enough to build ONE decent stadium and instead settled on trying to make a silk purse of the sow's ear that is Eden Park. It was frankly rather embarrassing.

It encapsulates the legacies of Think Big and the BRT in one package - state investment turned to mud by the former, private investment turned to mud by the latter.

  • Hard News: Postcard from Christchurch,

I concluded that Joyce must be only listening to advice from his trucking and construction buddies, and viewing Auckland as a place that people and freight drive through on their way to the surrounding regions.

If Len Brown & Mike Lee take the Greater AKL mayoralty & deputy mayoralty respectively, I hope the two of them will show who's in charge. It could lead to some interesting political dynamics, à la Livingstone-vs-Thatcher in the 1980s.

  • Hard News: Postcard from Christchurch,

Wellington City Council has 179,000 people but Greater Wellington (including Hutt Valley & Porirua etc) has 460,000 versus Christchurch's 369,000.

In addition, Wellington's population has a higher density.

  • Speaker: How to Look Good as a Nazi,

The Japanese leadership were "forced" into action, based on the standards and norms prevailing in Japan at the time. A militaristic society with a code of honour and a tradition of military success against outsiders was never going to tolerate such "humiliation" for too long.

Of course, nobody's ever genuinely forced into committing an aggressive act. But that the Japanese would eventually respond to US "provocation" by force was probably inevitable.

MIT's Rei Izawa has some wisdom on the wider topic, published just after 9/11.

  • Speaker: How to Look Good as a Nazi,

Another friend commented that I have a metal plate/plaque (?) of Mao hanging on my toilet wall amongst other political kitsch art. Got it from a a flea market in Hongkong. My friend asked how a Chinese would feel about that, if his/her grandfather had been killed or tortured by the Great Chairman's regime.

Reminds me of the Chaff Mao cover furore a couple of years back. The joke was clearly on Mao and not the Chinese student community, and the editors did the right thing by standing their ground and explaining the context.

  • Hard News: Save the King's Arms,

I remember when Newmarket got its foot patrols back, crime dropped significantly and permanently in the area around Broadway. There's a lot to be said for police officers being right there on the pavement with the general public.

By a country mile. Especially as opposed to Orwell-esque cop-out surveillance cameras.

    Matt P:

But, then again, one suspects that Bhatnager's perspective is that anything that doesn't come from a composer who's been dead hundreds of years, or is backed by a major record label, ain't worth hearing.

    That rings a bell...

However, a surprisingly large number of women play WoW.

Or at least by men who like to play as female characters.
