    Arts threadjack...
Speaking of kiwi arts events, next week in New York City an intrepid band of New Zealand poets will be reading works by New Zealand poets at a live poetry event...
Tuesday 28th Feb, 6.30pm at Saatchi & Saatchi HQ, 375 Hudson St, New York, NY 10014.

Who are the Band of Bards from Aotearoa New Zealand?
These leading performers on the Aotearoa New Zealand spoken word scene are hand-picked rugged individualists, energetic imagineers, who will bring you poetry in motion from far-flung degrees of latitude, with a Kiwi-consciousness-raising cabaret, by turns eclectic, electric, comic, melancholic, idiosyncratic and euphoric. Spiraling out of the South Pacific to stand and deliver stories and lyrics about oceanic love, environmental vigilance, and the dramatic dilemmas of identity, this flying circus of Kiwiana activists, Pasifika scene-painters, fretboard-fingering songsters, acrobatic word-jugglers and megaphone motormouths promises to carry you across the date-line and re-orientate your inner global positioning satellite, all in the course of just one colorful evening.

The Poets From New Zealand to Perform in New York on February 28, 2012 are:
Jeffrey Paparoa Holman / David Eggleton / Hinemoana Baker / Sandra Bell / Jay Clarkson / Pamela Gordon (reading Janet Frame) / Otis Mace / Tusiata Avia

Many other Kiwi poets have lent their voice to this project since its inception in 2009. Several prominent American poets have also participated.

...and a lamb lies down on Broadway...
I believe in conjunction with this that Phantom have even managed to get a Janet Frame poem, The End, up on a billboard in Times Square...
I'm just hoping one (or more) of our news services will pick up on this story and cover it here, - l'il ol' us talking truth (and beauty) to power in the heart of the beast...
(heck it could even be a Media 7 filler, nudge, nudge...)

  • OnPoint: SECRET MILITARY LULZ,

Xtra Xtra, read all about it!
ah well now, maybe McCully can have a chat with Coleman and arrange to get his emails put through the NZDF’s new $83 million 20 year satellite deal with Wideband Global Satellite (WGS) programme, which is a network of nine military satellites built by Boeing and operated by the US Department of Defence.

Any unused capacity can be made available to other government agencies.

Hell at that price you’d think so, too!
Sheesh, are we operating drones somewhere we don’t know about?
There’s maybe 300-400 defence personnel scattered about the planet, I’d have thought we coulda piggy backed out on some of the satellites GCSB monitors or at least that the Americans coulda given us a better deal for all the intel we pull down for them (I mean why else would we be listening to all those communications?)

    traffic flowers...

The traffic cones thing is pretty amazing.

I have to agree, driving today their omnipresence made me smile a lot more than normal, this was in effect the river of flowers that would normally have graced the Cathedral at this time of year...

The initiative's initiator, Henry Sunderland, is a local, if not national, treasure, many of you will remember him and his twin brother Eddie (sadly now deceased) and their regular spot on an after school TV show back in the latter part of the 20th century, they also put a book out of creative things to do with all sorts of things, Henry has created many 'art cars' in chchch and is a world famous Gnomologist, he is also on the trust that does the Kidsfest each year in Chchch as well as lecturing at the Polytech as Joe pointed out...

Pete Majendies, who created the '185 white chairs piece' is also an indefatigable creator, an old mate of Michael Leunig back in Australia, he created the Christmas Ark on the vacant Sydenham school site last christmas, and each preceding year he has created large public christmas installations that give people a chance to reflect (usually in Latimer square or The Square) as well many smaller personal artworks, he does a good line in visual puns, too...

it is these individual initiatives and responses that speak loudest to me and reinforce the place of art as one of the pillars of a balanced society...

Archibald Alexander Leach swears by LSD!

Before the Beatles, Timothy Leary, and Carlos Castaneda, LSD was the drug of choice for a rarefied circle of glamorous elites who ingested it as part of their psychiatric therapy sessions. We’re talking about people as famous and diverse as aquatic actress Esther Williams, Time publisher Henry Luce, director Sidney Lumet, authors Aldous Huxley and Anais Nin, and composer André Previn. Cary Grant never tried to keep his LSD use secret. In fact, he spoke glowingly about it in a 1959 interview with Look magazine, saying that it had brought him close to happiness for the first time in his life. He also said that LSD taught him immense compassion for other people, and had helped him conquer his own shyness and insecurity.

    Wuxtra! Wuxtra! Readallaboutit!
and then there were the scandal sheets of the 18th century...

With its erudite celebrity dish and insider's tone, the Spectator was aimed at middle-class readers who used it as a cheat sheet to ingratiate themselves into high society, as well as upper-class types eager to make sure they knew all the latest dirt on their contemporaries. And like its modern-day counterparts, the publication's most frequent targets were also its most reliable informants: women of power who loved to spread rumors about their enemies and foes. "There was a competition among upper-class women about who had the best gossip," Gee said. "They were fantastically catty and loved to see their contemporaries fall."
At the other end of the spectrum, pamphlets like "Characters of the Present Most Celebrated Courtesans" were intended for a working-class audience - scullery maids and serving wenches who would have picked it up at lending libraries - though the gentry enjoyed it as a guilty pleasure, too.
Printed on much cheaper paper than the Spectator, these pamphlets trafficked exclusively in the tales of highborn women who had disgraced themselves in public, ensnaring readers with lurid titles like "The History of Betty Bolaine, the Canterbury Miser," and crude drawings of dissipated women in various stages of physical ruin - the etched equivalents of a bleary-eyed Lindsay Lohan mug shot.
