Whitney Houston's death was sad, if not unpredictable or unexpected, but I fail to see how it justified the entire front page of The Press World Section and at least another page since...
It is as if the media having, undoubtedly, added to the pressures in her unravelling life have gone into overkill for their last feeding frenzy...
Not pretty, not inspiring, just lamentable all round...

  • Hard News: MySplore,

    take me to the waita...

Maori standards set to a ska rhythm. Waita and the music of Jamaica usually meet in a roots reggae style, but I now wonder if it was meant to be a jump-up ska beat all along.
I felt a real surge of happiness as I sat on the hill surrounded by people singing along to waita, gazing across the crowd and out to the Gulf in the setting sun.

    do you mean waiata?
or is it (they) a band?

I see the City CEO, Tony Marryatt, decided to take a half day off to play golf at some council sponsored event - shame he had to miss a public excluded meeting about "additional governance arrangements for earthquake recovery planning". Which is one I would have thought he should have been at...

    What's wrong with this picture...
a random 'snapshot' mystery for an open thread...
I saw this story on The Herald's site this morning, and was mystified by the obvious disconnect of facts (or revelation of time travelling thieves!)...

The Sun newspaper reported that the workers found a vault with hundreds of safety deposit boxes in the basement of the building in Manchester.
The boxes reportedly date back to 1935 when the site was used by the Midland Bank.
The Bank of England could not locate the owners and arranged for a drill to break open the boxes. Inside was jewellery, gold, a gun and master tapes by British bands Joy Division and New Order, all of which have been sent to the Treasury.

    !!!????
Well it was reported by The Sun...

  • Hard News: This Is Not A Complicated Issue,

speaking of the cost of access...
Nice to see that Trevor Mallard has a profitable sideline in the ticket scalping business!
While I don't know if the Homegrown Festival has applied for "Major Event" status as defined under the 2007 Act (that Mallard helped push through - for the RWC), Mallard comes across as a profiteer when telling one TradeMe bidder, who offered $500 for the 4 $95 tickets, 'I will let the auction run. And I think your price is cheeky.'
I just hope he wasn't doing it from his work computer, during work hours...

    Pole position...

I’ve seen two hearing-able people use sign as fast private communication in a crowded room. It was kind of badass.

And so much easier than semaphore, hard to find flag-waving room in crowds, and I won't even start on the OSH implications...
