Ah, but he did go to Sweetwaters that time.
I went to the first Ngaruawahia festival, Split Enz (Endz then), Blerta, Butler, Dragon, Fairport Convention and some heavy metal/rock band I forget (Black Sabbaff maybe?) - Earwig mag were producing a daily paper and I still have a scar where I cleverly burnt the end of my plastic wrist pass to stop it falling off, surprise, surprise, it dripped molten plastic on my arm- <DOH!>
Went to Sweetwaters twice - once with Toy Love as road crew and once when at Rip It Up, I wasn't going to go but when I realised I had a free ticket, a ride there and back, backstage pass and caravan to watch the cricket in, well... (or as the modern argot would have it - nek minnit!).
Mostly I remember the epic cricket game played between the backstage caravans, which even Talking Heads management couldn't stop, though at times the ball was replaced with members of the vegetable kingdom, players included 'Arry Ratbag, Doug Hood, Roger Shepherd, and many others, I'm pretty sure Russell was there - but I'm not gonna swear to anything this far beyond...

Here is an entry, which may give an insight why EQC comms are so...
I especially liked her blog entry from October 1 stating that "The satorial standard among men in Wellington has gone through the roof in the last couple of days."
I'm guessing there was no rash of Buddhist 'sudden enlightenment' (satori) on the Capital's streets, but that some of the visible men may be dressing better (sartorially)...and there are some doozies: in the EQC PDF

• Reliance on rumour and leaks
• Not questioning the self-interest of informants
• Allowing leakers to be protected by anonymity
• Using emotive lanugage like beleaguered and bungled and nepotism* I thought that was what they wanted?

Last time I was in Hastings I was astonished at the number of silk trees.
I spotted lots of Jacarandas in Napier this week, too...
I was also forced to enjoy a wedding at Black Barn and spend an idyllic day at Waimarama, life is rough sometimes...

(and I also didn't notice the 4.7 quake there on Wednesday, but it was 25km deep and in the middle of the night, luxury...) -

ta for the proper chronology Jonathan, I do wish I'd kept a diary back then and what with the planet's collective memory, wikipedia, blacked out last night, well...
...but I do remember being stunned that The Birthday Party were knocking back bottles of whiskey at their afternoon soundcheck!
I am hoping all my old posters are still ok, stuck in my lock up (nestled against the port hills) that I haven't been able to get in to since the February earthquakes...

The peril of also having a hand drawn Chris Knox ticket became apparent after the Wellington concert, when a beautifully hand done biro version (on the right coloured card) showed up in the post-show ticket reconciliation…
I think the Zimblis tour of New Order with John Cooper Clarke may even predate the Fall, in the same year (‘82), I remember having to help pick them up at wgton airport and JCC threatening not to play (or even leave his room) unless certain needs were met… Luckily words put in the right ears in a lively Wgton scene kept everything on track…
…and if I recall correctly it was Lees and West who were the first using this ’email’ thing in the antipodean promoter business, they supplied Doug with a computer to stay in touch, spooky little green letters on a tiny little screen – its use sealed the deal on getting the Residents to play here, they were so tickled that someone here was ‘on line’. (Now can someone ’fess up to that eyeball theft!)
PS: there’s an interesting interview with Ken West here – some of which was in a video interview with the NZ Herald last year, I believe

Just heard the radio news with Nicky Wagner saying it was good that Labour weren't pursuing a judicial recount for Chch Central and that now she could get on with earthquake rebuilding work for Chch - jeez ya mean she's just been sitting on her hands till now - any excuse, eh!?

Olly has left the building…
Endearingly filthy and rebellious.
Some young punk band …Speaking of endearing proto punks, some of you may have heard that Oliver Lindsey Scott (Olly) died in Invercargill on Christmas Day, he was 60 years old.
Christchurch denizens will remember him from Mollett Street and The Gresham, as the founder of the Basket Cases (also known as the Detroit Haemorrhoids, and briefly the OK String Band) members of which went on to form Toy Love, The Playthings, The Bats, The Androidss and The Gordons… Olly was also in The Belle Motions and most recently The Chick Magnets.
He also had a band in the UK, called 69, before he came to NZ for a holiday and stayed… and an album Graffenstadden.He created many fine instruments under the guise of SPOGBAM, the Society for the Promotion of Guitar Butchery And Manufacture, including work on Paul Kean’s bass, a clip together triple neck guitar and the heaviest drum set I have ever had to move regularly, made from heavy gauge steel…
His many talents included recycled denim tailoring, and memorable garments included some made entirely from pockets – not a great garment to misplace something in…
He also self financed and published an authoritative biography of Buster Keaton The Little Iron Man – he spent a lot of time interviewing Keaton’s widow, Eleanor, to get the best details.
He ran the occasional hands-on toy museum for kids (most memorably at the now destroyed Linwood community hall) from his once vast horde of trains and toys…
There is much more to be said I’m sure – feel free to add any recollections.
He is survived by his daughter Dommie.
He will be missed…Roy Colbert has posted a great memorial piece in The ODT called Olly of the shed was one out of the box – with which I have only a few very minor quibbles about veracity…

...and I remember Kotahitaka when it was derelict, and sheep rested inside (there were still old pews – and hymnbooks!
Reminds me of a lovely old church in a paddock at Oaro (Kaikoura coast side of the Hundalees) back in the late '60s early '70s, a tiny wooden building falling apart with sheep and wandering through and pages of bibles (or hymn books) written in maori lying about - don't know what happened to it...
Damn, triggered too many memories, now I want a feed of crayfish...
