  • Hard News: KIlling it will be the easy part,

    @Just thinking:

Let's remeber alot of our coastline is in private, even foreign hands

Have you got a reference for that? I've heard that claim before, but never known where to look to verify the claim.

("I read it on a blog" doesn't cut much mustard)

  • Hard News: Swine flu and swearing,

What will they think of next? One of these, maybe: http://www.spinadvertising.co.nz/ecogo/

(but what would my local mechanic think of it?)

  • Up Front: Amazons Are Not the Only Fruit,

    From the Guardian:

The ranking removal seemed to depend on how Amazon filed each book. The 2003 paperback edition of Fry's autobiography Moab Is My Washpot, which Amazon tags as "gay", is unranked, whereas the original hardback , filed under "memoir", has a ranking.

    Huh.

  • Hard News: For Good Friday,

**Emma:** I'd kind of like to see this broken down a bit more. Are people saying they want other religions 'taught' like Christian Religious Instruction is now, or are they just saying they'd quite like Social Studies?

Well, I wasn't surveyed, but I've often had this thought. I suppose I'm in the "social studies" camp, though I've never thought of it like that.

For me, it's that, these days, you've got a pretty good chance of running into people from a wide range of religions. What do we know about muslims? Well, they're all arabic terrorists. Well, there's over a billion of them, so surely that's not quite right? But I certainly didn't learn that at school.

So, since religion is still important to a great many people in this world, it would be nice if young people came out of school knowing what the major religions believe and how they all fit together. I don't think we need to indoctrinate the youth (and pantheistic indoctrination could be difficult :-) ), but would you count someone educated if they didn't know the basics of the Jesus story?

  • Hard News: Mac Ouch,

Well, you can remove the 'sports' and 'entertainment' sections from the bottom bit.

And I've been using Firefox and "remove it permanently" to cull other sections i don't want, like Puzzles.

But it annoys me that I only get four headlines plus a picture in the entire first screen, and I have to scroll down two pages to get to the main content.

Maybe this will finally be the catalyst for me to install Greasemonkey :-/

  • Hard News: The Public Bad,

    (2) In subsection (1), repeat infringer means a person who repeatedly infringes the copyright in a work

Can the ISPs say "Ok, we'll cut this guy off -- once the courts have established that he did repeatedly infringe copyright" ?

Or are they required to believe the complainant?

  • Up Front: The Missus,

I don't want to derail this thread prematurely, but I need to point out that the site John Fouhy links to, while it appears to have an accurate copy of the Talmud, is run by someone who has carefully and selectively culled secondary sources for all the supporting pages, in order to cast them in the worst possible light.

    Really? Oops.

I'd heard second-hand that Jewish religious law had a section on how often men were required to satisfy their wives, based on their occupation. I thought it might be amusing to post here, so I went googling for it, and that was the best hit I found.

I don't claim to be any kind of expert, and I certainly don't have an angle to push.

(I also don't see the quote as reflecting badly on Jews.. more as an interesting glimpse into the kinds of issues families faced in those days. And, that it's not "this is how often wives have to put out", but "this is how often women are entitled to sex")

  • Up Front: The Missus,

The Talmud has advice on the duties of a husband:

THE TIMES FOR CONJUGAL DUTY PRESCRIBED IN THE TORAH ARE: FOR MEN OF INDEPENDENCE, EVERY DAY; FOR LABOURERS, TWICE A WEEK; FOR ASS-DRIVERS, ONCE A WEEK; FOR CAMEL-DRIVERS, ONCE IN THIRTY DAYS; FOR SAILORS, ONCE IN SIX MONTHS. THESE ARE THE RULINGS OF R. ELIEZER.

  • Hard News: The Flashing Question Mark,

I find applejack a handy utility to install in case of disk errors (although obviously it won't help if you can't see your disk at all): http://applejack.sourceforge.net/ Basically, it gives you an easy way to run repair utilities from single-user mode without needing your OS disc.

Also, ever since an OS upgrade broke my MBP, I've followed advice I read online, and booted into safe mode before applying any OS upgrade.
