  • Random Play: He bangs the drum,

Just as an aside--I am in Dunedin Wed-Friday and I notice that Marianne Dissard (with Flip Grater & Delany Favidson) are playing there on Thursday night. Worth going to, do you reckon?

Geoff. I saw them in Napier. 3 quite different artists.Marianne does her stuff to live backings (sounds like it's real people playing instruments) off her laptop as she plays no instrument herself. It's better than it sounds as she does it in a cabaret kind of way. Delany uses his guitar and a looping machine to generate rhythms and stuff for his southern gothic style and ends up sounding like a cross between Tom Waits and Sparklehorse. When the 3 of them sang together at the end it's quite good too. I enjoyed it.

  • Random Play: He bangs the drum,

Of course it may actually be a good thing that the drum solo goes on and on because often after the drum solo comes something even worse.........the bass solo!!!

  • Hard News: Space for Ol Dat I See,

We cyclists don't stand a chance if this guy's attitude is anything to go by.
Don't know about anyone else but one of my main bugbears when riding is the amount of broken glass around the streets of Napier. It's like everyone just tosses bottles out the window of their car without giving a shit.

  • Random Play: He bangs the drum,

What was particularly interesting about The Band was how 'organic' their music was, in that they did not appear to listen to other music, nor actively search for references.

In an era of overblown musical excess the Band were a breath of fresh air and the only group of musicians that deserved to be called The Band. Shame it all finished so messily.

Um. Not too early to start the drummer jokes then???

What were the last words the drummer said before he was kicked out of the band?
"Hey guys lets try one of my songs!"

Anyway here's a clip. No solo. Just one of the coolest drummers around. Levon Helm.

  • Field Theory: Wellington, after dark,

That's pretty committed but if I wasn't in Wellington I would've done the same.

It's not the first time and probably won't be the last. Me and a concert going buddy have been doing the trip for a few years. As we get a bit older though we've started staying the night when we can. Luckily it's still the school holidays so I could recover.

So I also got a good look at Jon Rauhouse on the pedal steel guitar. All night I was like "oh, that's what that sound is on the album!"

I was like that with Kelly Hogan. Bits I thought Neko overdubbed on the records are actually Kelly singing.
You would have thought with the demand for tickets instead of a second show they could have moved to a bigger seated venue and had just one show.

Damn. You were there too. I can't have been too far away from where you were standing although not as close to see the sneakers. How good was her band and Kelly Hogan was so cool. She's an integral part of Neko's sound. Time the Bathhouse got some decent ventilation/aircon though. Drove down from Napier then drove back after. Got home at 4! Next trip-Calexico in March.
Oh and if you are in Welly this weekend try and see the Tour de Trois-Flip Grater/Delany Davidson/ Mariane Dissard. Saw them tonight in Napier and it's an interesting combination. Davidson has a southern gothic thing going on and Dissard is French but lives in Tuscon and has recorded with Calexico.

  • Legal Beagle: David Garrett wins,

Why in any semblance of a sane universe do we let the dickheads who nothing about a particular case decide how best apply the law?

Because this administration doesn't want to or won't listen to the experts/people who are doing the job and are at the coalface so to speak.
The above sentence could equally be...

Why in any semblance of a sane universe do we let the dickheads who nothing about education decide what's best for children?

  • Random Play: The Big Day Out: Lambs to…,

Completely OT but apart from the 4 hr drive to Welly I'm looking forward to Neko Case at the Bathhouse tomorrow night.
Oh and did anyone see Dragon on Sainsbury's show tonight? Mark Williams is looking a little older.

From the Marine Parade road front the hotel presents a somewhat tatty wall of discolouring curtains and strapped on aircon units.

Actually having had breakfast there the other day i will admit that this does detract from the overall look.

The barbarians of West Shore have stolen my childhood.

    You're not wrong there.
As for Paris M, he may have designed some half decent places....but a lot of them leak.
