I get offended when some cretin thinks it funny to spell it otherwise

Could be an honest mistake. I'm curious. Did T2S get Keri or Kerry closer to your actual name?

Yes, and besides, the odds aren't truly 50:50, nor are they required to be. They're stacked in the house's favor, and that's just the way it is. Any house that ran 50:50 odds would have to get its money some other way, perhaps through the drinks.

  • Hard News: The Casino,

Whether we like it or not, it just so happens that the (variable) reward patterns of gambling are perfect for creating addiction.

Much like fishing? I knew there was a gambler in me somewhere. Being a catch-and-release type, the house always wins.

  • Hard News: The Casino,

but I do think that pokies are, pure and simple, designed to be a way to harvest as much money from the addicted over as long a term as possible.

There's something more sinister about being harvested by a machine than by another human. Whether or not the outcome is the same as it has been for thousands of years. Perhaps it's the slow rate the machines do it, because they don't have to feed themselves. At least in the old days, gamblers would get ripped hard by a crook in minutes, and could end up a slave, or dead, off a stupid bet. Somehow that seems more honorable than dripping your week's money away to a large box for a few hours of extremely low grade entertainment. Or something. I don't get it either way, lucky me.

  • Hard News: The Casino,

One thing about the casino you can't fault. You can always get a drink 24/7. Pretty sure they sell smokes, and I'm told the flash hookers can be found there too. There's an arcade of computer games, a net cafe if you just have to have a blog. You can usually get a reasonable meal, at a rip price. There's always sport on big TVs. The view is awesome. They've got all the major legal addictions covered, and you don't have to go far to find illegal ones.

I'm pretty sure my dislike of the place is mostly on account of my puritanical upbringing. Which curiously, was not administered at the hands of any Christians, but rather the modern manifestation of those sympathies, earnest urban liberals. The irony!

  • Hard News: The Casino,

We had an extensive discussion here a while ago about what-to-do-about-pokies. It got quite heated, and some people thought my distaste for them (or support of community efforts to keep them out) was just me denying people innocent fun.

I remember it well. It was my first serious departure in opinion from you, and I still feel the same way about it. For me it's one of those cases of "I feel that there's something stink about gambling, but rationally, there's no real difference between it and a million other ways of ruining your life, some of which I like". It's a real clash of mind over emotion, and so far, mind is still winning, at least within myself.

I doubt the alternate meaning is particularly widely understood. It's a good word, but it will fade. There's only so much longer there will be old farts who dodged the draft around. There will still be fuckwit hawks, but they'll have to find new ways to be hypocrites. Won't be hard.

I once found a wasp inside the hive entombed in propolis

How curious. I wonder if they did that to prevent it rotting?

Yes it's pretty hard to imagine not noticing a broken crank. It sounds like the broken crank is actually the guy who wants to sting you for $300.

you can probably squeeze some more performance out of it.

Heh, a man after my own heart. I recently managed to drive a car with a blown head gasket for over a week before it finally actually karked and started bellowing steam out of the exhaust pipe. It was precisely the time I needed to find a new (second hand) car.

I decided it was best to carry home the remains and consider a second opinion.

Like a fully operational second hand bike, for which you now have a nice supply of spare parts? After spending the $300, that's all you'll have anyway, minus the spares.

I have also always wanted an underground lair. But I was never able to find the fabled caves of Mt Albert.
