  • Hard News: Unhappy Birthday,

    Hi James

While the rest of Iraq is not like Kurdistan, as the article linked to above there is plenty of reason for optimism, if the US stays for a few more years and helps the Iraqis stand on their feet.

LOL, if the US was actually in 'Kurdistan' then what you're saying might make sense. In actual fact all you're doing is showing just how these crazy Mesopotamians can actually run a country by themselves right now without any US help. If the US even formally recognized Kurdistan, then they could claim to be helping. Right now all they're doing is standing by with their huge airforce while Turkey mounts bombing runs inside the very Iraq that we are meant to feel so optimistic about.

I liked it when he posted. This bizarre parallel view on the world just sort of opened up before you on the screen.

Me too. I might disagree with 99% of what he says, but he does turn the echo off, and he's polite in doing it. He actually reads a lot like a PR guy.

IO, what biz did Bush work in? Before he became a full time arsehole that is. The only thing you need a tinfoil hat for is to protect yourself from the obvious. Nowadays he's not even hiding the fact that he just doesn't give a shit about looking after the US - the economy is melting down and all he has to say is ... nothing.

That Blood Diamond is a real bumout. <spoiler warning>Even with the fairy tale sugar coating (I knew it would happen the moment I saw the Warner Brothers logo at the start) of the poor African guy getting his family back. Good to see Leo DiCaprio back where he belongs, getting killed at the end of his movies.</spoiler warning> His African accent was probably the best attempt I've ever heard an American make.

Oh and 'Bin' got a lot of play. Ozzies would fall to the floor laughing at that. But the only name that gets on my goat is Benjamin.

Stop your whining all. In Ozzie I was routinely referred to as Benedictus E Albert W Cacarumbus the Third. Or Cacarumbus for short. I didn't know why and I didn't care - anything was an improvement on Sheepshagger.

Seize the Means of Production, Russ! Put the jackbooted running dogs of imperialism against the wall and tell them you don't like their billboards.

Meh... the loathing and contempt of the loathsome and contemptible.

Yes, 2 labels is twice as good!

  • Hard News: Unhappy Birthday,

I've never been comfortable with being part of this "The Left" thing that Chris Trotter et al talk about.

Heh, I get it too. It's always annoying to have the entire contents of your mind given a simple label.

Mind you 'sook' is a pretty fitting label for Ansell. What kind of wuss thinks there will be no opposition to a political billboard? I guess advertisers aren't used to that sort of thing.

A return to isolationism might actually be a good thing for the US, at least for a while. If it gets them out of Iraq. But the fading memory leaves less hope of that - it's easy to get away with a debacle if no one remembers it's happening.

  • Hard News: Unhappy Birthday,

I think Ansell is simply seeing you as synonymous with the 'leftist' blogosphere. Not an uncommon thing, and probably quite a good thing for you. I can see a billboard: Browns vs Clowns.

I notice that Iraq coverage has slipped to bugger all in the US these days, in favour of the elections and economic woes. Which is odd since it's a cause of a lot of economic woes, and a highly political issue that could be milked in the elections. I speculate that Americans can only feel national guilt for so long.

Compared with the the Australian public sector, NZ's is very efficient.

LOL, yeah, I got a mate who got a job recently working as a lawyer for the Govt over in Sydney. He said after 3 months he hadn't actually been asked to do any work whatsoever. When it came time for his review, his boss said she was really, really pleased with his work. And he's getting paid damn good money too.
