The thing is, in the current IPV4 world, addresses are a scarce resource and cost money to provide. Should the majority (who don't need one) subsidise the majority who do?

I really don't buy this vis a vis DSL broadband. My router is always connected and taking up some IP. It's always been a total rort that static IPs came at any additional charge. They just do it because they can. And now they won't even give me one at all on my plan, for no reason that makes any sense to me. That's why I privately (and now publicly) surmise that it's all about kicking me in the peering goolies, something that I experimented with over a long time. Any time I had peering on, my connection mysteriously dropped that night and my IP changed. It could be coincidence, but I doubt it.

Watching them now is a bit like watching a Shakespearean play where the plot hinges on a letter being dispatched on horseback.

Now you're making me feel really, really old.

I would also like to add that at Orcon we welcome your, or indeed anyones mum to join.

I'm gonna tell my mum you said that tonight. Been trying to convince her to get broadband for ages, but when I lent her a Vodem it made her think that broadband was actually slower than dialup. They're in Herne Bay...how's that situated for high speed Orcon goodness?

  • Island Life: Get over it,

I used to get sore 'down there' on my bike, until I discovered riding 'ergonomically'. As in, upright, instead of crouching down. I don't race, so I don't see the point of giving yourself back and neck pain, sore balls, getting exhausted, and reducing your rear vision. Just sit upright like you're riding a unicycle (try taking your hands off to get the perfect position), and no more sore nuts. OK, you can't go as fast, but just leave earlier. I don't even get sweaty when I cycle, it's basically about as strenuous as walking, but about 4 times faster. On steep hills, the time honoured expedient of getting off the bike is still an option.

But then I was actually forced into cycling, rather than choosing it on account of being a green exercise nut. I rode to school because I was too young to do anything else. When it really is your main form of transport, you work these things out.

You also work out that cars are sooo much more convenient and safe. The closest I've ever come to death on the road has been on pushbikes. They are way under-engineered. But fun.

  • Hard News: Geekstravaganza,

I wonder how long before "World of Warcraft" becomes an essential of life. Coz without it, you know, you might have to go outside - and thats scary, with people and cars that might kill you and bad weather that could freeze you to death.

...and worst of all, your online character could get killed while you are away.

I know you were not being that serious about phones not being essential, particularly as you admit to having at least two of them. Of course you can survive without one, but quality of life is substantially diminished, even for dole bludgers.

Yes, that's the bare minimum required to not die. But to live a soul needs music.

You know, I think my dad would get upset if I used him as a synonym for lack of technical expertise. He's a retired test pilot and aerospace scientist.

Mum, I think, would be fine on it.

I think it's reasonably safe to use Grandma as an example, and it's not sexist - both Granddads are dead.

Humankind managed for 40,000 years without one

I'm sure they'd rather have had it if they could've, though.

I'm surprised I was able to survive before cellphones, personally. I think my son will be skeptical about such old-timer's stories. "What did you do if you were late?" "Well son, in those day, people just had to suck on it".

  • Hard News: Geekstravaganza,

Yeah I got the 'Go Large' plan too. Now I can't get a fixed IP address because that would interfere with Telecom's ability to switch your IP any time you start peering. Still, at least it doesn't cost me hundreds every month now.

r but once I can have a one-box media streaming, gaming, DVD, Blu-Ray and HDTV solution then I'll need to buy that and the TV to match

Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny...

This Orcon news is really making me bitter towards those inner suburbs. If they could just be turned into a lovely parkland belt, or a cute and cuddly 64 lane ring road, then us commoners in the middle suburbs might get a look in on reasonably priced broadband.

Heh, doh. Tracy got there first...my only other 2c...if it does allow static, pick an address outside the range your DHCP server covers. Future proof!

  • Hard News: Geekstravaganza,

    Any advice gratefully received.

Does it allow you to bypass DHCP by picking a static address?
