I reckon the issue is not my own opinion about drugs or Prast, but the likely response of a majority of other electors. I don't rate his chances, having seen what the public is currently supporting.
Despite some admirable sentiment, in that one article he also talks about stopping building an almost-completed prison on government land that Council has little control over, and allowing cars back onto Grafton Bridge without seeming to understand why it's now bus-only. Competence might come into the deicsion for some folk, along with character.

and allowing cars back onto Grafton Bridge without seeming to understand why it's now bus-only.
I believe he's also promised to refund anyone who's been fined for driving on the bridge. Pretty nutty, yes.
Competence might come into the decision for some folk, along with character.
I'm guessing he won't be asked a lot about transport policy on his guest slot with Mikey this week ...
-
I'm yet to meet anyone who has become a better person as a result of the heavy use of alcohol.
It's not really the point is it?
I suppose the point is that there's a point in the P addiction spiral where the buggers will actually insist to you that it is making them better people.
-
True Sacha, slay us with policy and strategy anyone please!!!!
But drug use only gets debated like this, as we slowly uncover who has actually bought P in Auckland.
Who are you filthy people??
Not me, quite honestly this scene has passed me by completely.Maybe I'm lucky?

Well are you? Are you lucky punk? I like to think that only once were we ripped off by a P addict. And I suppose a couple of grand is a small price to pay to get said person out of our lives. Having said that, other people have taken advantage of our generosity, which was no better.I am very thankful however that I don't like to go fast.Lessons eh?
Competence might come into the deicsion for some folk,
and articulation, but experience does count for some wisdom, so let's find out what they actually have to do first before we have to pick please.
-
.Lessons eh?
sure, lessons, the money boozers owe me. I'm lucky on the P front.
But what is the P population and where are they?
-
slay us with policy and strategy anyone please
Good luck with that - in an expensive presidential-style campaign like this, any actual policy poisitions are even more likely to be subjected to vicious, deliberate spin and get drowned out by lightweight media focussing on what colour tie a candidate chooses (and that's just the women). The internet is way more likely to inform you.
Best question for voters to ask - "who do I trust with local government in the Auckland region? Who's going to stick up for what I believe in as things shake out?"
And then get you, your friends, family and colleagues to register and vote.
-
But what is the P population and where are they?
I'd start at...Hospo!
Then, look around you. -
Where in particular should we look? Every market has a demographic.
-
What's Hospo?
-
Hospitality industry - bars, cafes, clubs, etc
-
"who do I trust with local government in the Auckland region? Who's going to stick up for what I believe in as things shake out?"
So from my schooling here the mayoralty is actually bullshit, we are voting on a more soviet style grand comittee. The Mayor is just one vote.
-
Hospitality industry - bars, cafes, clubs, etc
Surely work satisfaction would be enough.

The thing with p is, it is everywhere. demographic, out the window. I'm going to sleep now.Sacha can continue I am sure. Night.xx

I am afraid there is no need to psychoanalyse the (nonexistent) huuuuuge emotional hooooole in my soouuuuul, or whatever.
Hmmm. Maybe my inner wowser just needs a drink.

That's why you joined the Wellingtonista, right?

Nah. It's more like the US-style drug courts pushed by Dunne et al, which put every kid who's caught with a joint (or something) through "drug treatment".
It sounds good, because it's better than sending kids to jail. But it's a howlingly bad use of resources -- because what, really, are you looking to treat?
Your point about NZ's unhappy bingeing culture is well made. But I'd guess that the by far most common reason for taking recreational drugs is because it's fun.
To use a recent example, Phil Goff's daughter didn't have Es tucked in her bra because there was anything wrong with her life -- but because she was all set to spend a few hours dancing her ass off with her friends. And, in all probability, throwing her hands in the air and waving them like she just didn't care.
It might turn into something other than fun -- and people who take P may find it turning into something else quite quickly -- but we'd have a better drug debate if that simple truth was borne in mind.
-
So that's what a Mayor does. Makes everything look pretty
-

Hey, could become known as the "Booster" bra. :)
Coat, getting.
-
but we'd have a better drug debate if that simple truth was borne in mind
Totally. I often think it's missing when people talk about responsible drug use, usually meaning "How people who have been using their drug for decades eventually come to use it". I especially include alcohol as one of those drugs.
-
The cost so far of busting small-time pot growers: Two police officers and one police dog killed, three police officers seriously wounded, and armoured vehicles on the streets.
What a victory for law and order.
Whatever the disease everyone here is trying to prevent, the cure is worse.
-

We use to have an anti-drug campaign in Italy years ago going by the slogan "chi ti droga ti spegne", "drugs switch you off". Comedian Paolo Rossi pointed out I thought rather cogently that they switch you on first, at least for a bit, and that so long as you don't acknowledge that fact we're not going to go very far.
-
... responsible drug use, usually meaning "How people who have been using their drug for decades eventually come to use it".
I like this angle so much I may steal it and pretend it's mine.
-
If it wasn't for how many users I've known (of alcohol inclusive) who have ended up either ruined or dead, I'd wholeheartedly subscribe to that angle.

Concerns: What happened to the psychiatric patient? Why did the aroma of cannabis smoke take precedence? How hard is it for the police to conclusively verify the calibre of a firearm? Are search warrants still required in New Zealand?
Mitchel Alatalo, 39, was shot in the thigh while trying to escape through a window.
focusing on the task at hand could have prevented a lot of bloodshed.
