  • Robyn Gallagher,

If the results of this study seem obvious, then you've probably never hung out in the Trade Me forums.

Pregnancy weight gain is a given, but some women have trouble dropping it. They may have no idea how to lose weight, and will cling to any old wife's tale they can regarding weight loss.

Given hot many fat mommas there are in America, it's surprising this study wasn't done earlier.

  • Mike Graham,

With regards to weight loss, that great Scottish philosopher Billy Connelly once remarked that the easiest way to lose weight was to "eat less and move more". Self evident yes, but not practised by enough of us!

  • Deborah,

So maybe the research on post-partum weight loss makes a bit more sense in the full context of Oken's research.

Oh, Neil. You're ruining all the fun!

  • Che Tibby,

i find the research disturbing in the context of striving for what many.... can't think of the word... "caucasians?" think is the ideal female shape.

teenage boy + big top end.

    yawn.

most of that post-pregnancy weight probably adds in just the right place to make her, you know, a woman.

Women come in all shapes and sizes and I, for one, don't need some bloke telling me how exactly I should look to look like, you know, a woman.

"1. Being really good looking and uber-rich increases your chance of getting laid."

I beleive Paris Hilton has been investigating this already.

The results are not in yet.

  • Leigh5,

I recently carried out my own study entitled "Breaking your leg a week before you are meant to be flying out to the Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean is a really stupid idea"
11 people took part - 1 had the real break (myself) while 10 mates took the placebo version (ie. no broken leg) and as I type are winging over the skies to the West Indies.

Findings are pretty conclusive and result not just in feelings of stupidity but also mild depression at the thought of having to now work the next 5 weeks and unreasonable bitterness towards placebo participants at the holiday they are on that was oganised by leg breakee....

  • James Green,

OK. So someone has to be boring... but it is worth pointing out that sometimes things which seem self-evident turn out to be totally wrong.

And, call me boring, but I had a look at Emily's paper, and it's probably fair to say that it's the journalist making her look stupid. A few interesting, and perhaps not self-evident things
    * A year post-birth, the average was .6kg away from pre-pregnancy weight (so on average, pretty much no extra weight)
    * Mothers failing to loose weight were on average approx 2 years younger
    * And there were a bunch of interesting things that didn't directly affect weight gain, such as employment status, depression, smoking, and breast-feeding

  • James Green,

My journalistic cynicism started early. By the age of 13, quotes from me, taken from an interview that never occurred had been published. And it hasn't really got a lot better ever since. One other career highlight was discussing Susan Wood's experiences in public toilets on Breakfast...
