Dude, you don't have to sell me, I already picked Ronaldo.
Hockey's an interesting one. I suppose Ovechkin, but maaaayybeeee Crosby
-
so I'll pick Ovechkin in the NHL.
Meh. You shoot that many times, sure, you'll pick up the Rocket.
He's not exactly led his team to glory. They're struggling to beat New York who have only scored about 10 goals all season, out in the first round last year as well.
I'd go with Crosby or Malkin. Toews, Bobby Ryan, or Steve Mason would all be fine too. Luongo if you weren't looking as long term.

He's a scoring machine and plays in a team that on balance is not as good as the Penguins. Plus some of those goals just happen to be unbelievable (case in point, the other day). I think he's making more of a difference than other players in the league who don't happen to be goalies. (So why didn't I choose a goalie? Luongo was a temptation.)

Shooting percentage 10.6, under all the NHL leaders, and behind the top shooters by almost 10%. He's only a +8, which when you consider how he's been awarded points for 110 goals in the regular season, shows weak defense. Compared to Pavel Datsuk, 97 points at +34. Or Zach Parise 90 points at +30.
He's a marquee player, and certainly a good one, but part of the reason that the Capitals have him is to bring people into the stadium in a non hockey town, which he's working well at. He gets big goals at big times, including a heap of GWG. He's got about 10 years to go on his contract, and if they get knocked out by the Rangers it won't be long before people start saying that it doesn't matter how many great goals you get, you're never going to be a great hockey player unless you lead your team to deep playoff runs. 82 regular season games only determine who you play at this time of year, the rest is meaningless.
Compared to the significance that Malkin brought to Penguins last year, when Crosby was out and he lead his team into the playoffs. That team went within two games of winning the cup, they probably wouldn't have been there if he hadn't stepped up.
(Umm, edition 5 of ice hockey posts that no one else cares about)

Oh, stuff them. You're right about Malkin taking the Pens on his shoulders last year, and playoff performance always counts double. But were I to start a team from scratch I'd pick Ovechkin first. Or maybe this guy.

Or maybe this guy.
I'd be dubious that anyone is going to be able jump on a plane, jump on an ice rink, and make a Canadian junior team, from playing inline. We have some inline players down here and its about a 2 year conversion process. The skating is different, and that whole hitting/not hitting changes the whole game.
Gore ice hockey junior Dane Dunlop just went to middle of nowhere Canada to try out for the Dauphins juniors. Ice Blacks Jordan Challis and Chris Eaden would be the ones you'd take out of the New Zealand system. Chris got the game tying and game winning overtime goal in the Ice Blacks recent win over Greece, which got them the 3rd division gold and promotion to division 2. I think Jordan spends his summers in North America for their winter season.

Rugby : Stirling Mortlock, great line- breaker, defender and reliable kicker. I wish, he was a kiwi.
Football : Nemanja Vidic, you can't win games without a great defender and he scores some great headers from set play.
Cricket : Mitchell Johnson, a genuine all rounder.
NRL : Michael Jennings, pace to burn and a punishing defender.
Didn't he just win some Player of the Year award?
I read somewhere that Ryan Giggs was named player of the year.

My picks from what I know.
Cycling: Female - Gotta be Nicole Cooke we still haven't seen the best of her: Male - Taylor Phinney with an option on Mark Cavendish.
Ironman: M-Terrenzo Bozzone F-Chrissie Wellington
ITU: Too hard to call at the 'mo but a good draft might be Rebecca Spence.
Who would I put long money on ? Taylor Phinney I doubt he will win a TDF but he could easily gold at Olympic pusuit and Time Trial - World Championships not out of the question.

Yup it was Giggs. All those footballers look the same to me

It was Giggs.
In a season where he’s started in just 12 games.
And people wonder Man Utd are so despised...

Twelve games, that's a low-key performance for a season. Must be more to that award than just playing.

Snooker - Alex Higgins, ok, he is not current, but team outings would have been a lot of fun. As an alternate this isn't bad and very current
