Field Theory: In Tauranga, my Mum was yelling

22 Responses

  • Emma Hart,

At one point one of the commentators said, "Chokljat all over George", and I quite lost my train of thought.

It was a really painful game to watch. The Ferns just looked so flat, including players who are usually just fizzing all the time.

  • Hadyn Green,

When players are standing in the midcourt with no one to pass to and getting three-second violations you know it's bad

  • Russell Brown,

Catherine Latu, a last-minute replacement for Romelda Aitken and not the most mobile player, was getting the best of one of the world's best defenders. Latu would go on to be MVP of the match.

She was awesome. An awesome big, mean bully.

  • Carol Stewart,

She was, eh? I was amazed how easily she got the better of Casey Williams. The feeders had no trouble at all in getting the ball to her, right under the post.

  • Hadyn Green,

Mum has been in touch. She didn't yell but did shake her head a lot.

[Latu] was awesome. An awesome big, mean bully.

She didn't move about much but I think her size meant Williams couldn't push her about like she usually does. Also Williams would often be standing a couple of metres off Latu rather than constantly in close like Mentor on van Dyk.

  • Dave Patrick,

Ruth Aitken will never be sacked as Silver Ferns coach - a series loss to England and a complete inability to win a series against Australia hasn't seen her go yet, so I can't see her going now.

She'll trundle on till the next World Cup/Commonwealth Games, where we'll narrowly beat/lose to Australia, and then at some stage she'll decide to retire. She must have a plain brown envelope stuffed with photos of the board of Netball New Zealand, she's so teflon-coated.

  • Hadyn Green,

Sweet: Kevin Rudd wearing an All Black tie after losing a bet with John Key. Key secretly wishing he'd made the wager more interesting,

  • Russell Brown,

    Here's something. Sports viewers:

International Netball (Silver Ferns vs World VII) Monday night TV ONE 483,100

International Tri Nations Rugby (All Blacks vs Wallabies) Saturday night Sky TV 444,100

Wow. Is pay TV killing rugby, or is it rugby doing it all on its own?

  • Robyn Gallagher,

Is there any truth to the idea that netball is mainly enjoyed by people in Canterbury, Otago and Southland?

  • Kyle Matthews,

Where does one get that sort of information Russell? I'd be very keen to see the viewer numbers for the ice hockey on Sunday on Sky Sport 3.

  • Hadyn Green,

International Tri Nations Rugby (All Blacks vs Wallabies) Saturday night Sky TV 444,100

Does that include estimates of pub viewers?

Is there any truth to the idea that netball is mainly enjoyed by people in Canterbury, Otago and Southland?

    Where does that come from?

(Look at all the questions you get when you post data)

  • LegBreak,

    And people without Pay TV.

    Interesting figures Russell.

What would also be relevant in your comparison is the viewing figures for the big games in the netball ANZ Cup on SKY.

Especially since those games that actually mattered.

  • George Darroch,

I would like more sports teams to wear bright pink. That colour is simply awesome.

  • Megan Wegan,

I only watched 2 quarters of the netball, so I don't really have much to say about that.

But, I was at TSB stadium last night, as was Hadyn, and would just like to say: OH HELL YES.

The kiwis out-played the Aussies all over the floor, wiping the smile off their collective smug face. It was awesome to watch. And the best crowd I've been in for ages.

    Great photos of the netball!

yeah, it's a pity there wasn't a bit more advertising/info about the ice hockey being on, I flicked over entirely by accident and caught the last couple of minutes of coverage, but it looks like it would have been a lot of fun to watch ....

  • Mike Brown,

So I hope we'll get a blog post for the basketball? (aka everything the netball wasn't)

Plus, you know, let's break that rugby/netball NZ sporting hegemony :)

Well, I have been bugging Hadyn, but in the meantime I'm sure Mike won't mind me linking to his great photos.

  • Megan Wegan,

    My favourite is this one.

He'd just been called for a (completely justified) intentional foul. Then he walked over to the other ref and said "We're not playing netball here, you know"

  • Tim Michie,

[F]ans can look forward to a feast of live NBL action... from the New Zealand Breakers at least.

Due to the Auckland club's deal with Maori TV, the Breakers will dominate coverage of the Australian league with 17 games including all 14 of their home matches

So I guess I'm the only one who would link the Ferns current misery to the development of the Trans-Tasman competition ?

That was my favourite part of the game! I think even the commentators were giggling.
