Field Theory: Me and Paul, brewing up a storm

  • Mark Thomas,

This seems like an opportune time to let you beer aficionados in Auckland know that a mate of mine has set up a craft brewery/bar/restaurant in Browns Bay. They opened on the weekend and by all accounts it's been a raging success. They're open every day from 11am except on Mondays when they're closed for brewing.

Hope you don't mind the blatant advertising.

  • BenWilson,

It’s dedicated, enthusiastic and energetic brewers like Paul from Croucher's and Luke from Epic and Richard from Emersons and Søren from 8-Wired and Andy from Renaissance and Stu from Yeastie Boys (and many others) that are changing the way we think about beer and changing what we think of beer drinkers.

I had a tour of Hallertau last year and the guide made the interesting comment that most of the best brewers begin as home brewers. Degrees in beerology are available, but they don't instill the love of beer so much as the science of large scale production, which is anathema to the creative process. So he said. Makes some sense.

Always happy to help makers of good beer (I assume it's good beer)

Well their friends seem to think so, but then again they would say that. I'll see if I can head over to the Shore some time this week to corroborate their tastings. I can certainly vouch for their home brewing credentials... check out the high tech equipment they were using at home

  • Raymond A Francis,

I notice a similar scene amongst the winemakers that I know, quite few make beer or bread or at least sourdough

  • Samuel Scott,

I am gonna have to have a rant... Croucher make some delicious beer. Their pilsner is delicious. I love it. What I think I like more than it's taste is its label. Dark, old worldy and different. WHY DID THEY FUCKING CHANGE IT? The new one is shit. They should change it back. It honestly makes me mutter and sigh as I stare at the beer fridge at Regional Wines, and then it makes me buy something else.

Ok, yes I am insane it is just a label. But this is the effect it has had on me. I am full of design rage.

You mean this one? It's pretty nice, but looks a little like Carlton Crown for me.

On a related note, have you seen the Oh, Beautiful Beer Flickr group and blog?

the new label is meh. I don't know why it upsets me so. I hate rebranding of anything. Grumpy old man alert.

  • Martin Lindberg,

I like the new labels. The other one seems a little ye olde beer for olde men. Still, not as bad as these.

  • Ben Austin,

I tried 8 Wired's ReWired at a specialist beer pub by Victoria Station, the Cask, a month or two back. It was pretty good and has totally changed my mind about Brown Ale
