No. He's a brilliant fullback who's never played at first-five. Those Herald sports columnists are trolling on a daily basis.
And it's too late now, but it does surprise me that Toeava hasn't been developed as a back-up first-five. He played there through age grades (and occasionally even at NPC level, iirc) and has all the requisite skills.

See I want Weepu in the spot, he's a playmaker and can kick. I think it'd be GENIUS! Of course anything we do at this stage (and indeed at any stage) is a roll of the dice.

I think he could fill in there at a pinch - lets say if both Slade and Weepu get injured, which is what happened to Carter and Evans in the 2007 quarterfinal that we don't talk about.
But having gone into the cup with 3 first five options - including Weepu - and now picked up a 4th from the Manawatu, you'd have to hope we're covered.

I want to do the decent think and support Slade, not least of all 'cause Carter told us too... but I can't help but think he's short on matches this year.
When he came on against Australia, a few years ago, for Cruden, he had an immediate positive impact I'm just not seeing that now.
Weepu has all the big match experience and, probably, a comparable skill set.
I agree Dagg's the best fullback in NZ, probably in the world, and shouldn't be mucked around, tempting though it is.

Piri, Toeava, Dagg(!?!) = panic selections, so I don't think Ted will (or should) go with those.
In my opinion we need to keep calm and rally behind Colin, a specialist first five who should grow into his game this weekend if given a chance. Paraphrasing JK, now that he is playing with the knowledge that he is now 'the man' and his spot is secure, rather than keeping the spot warm for Carter, might give him a bit more confidence. It seems that the selectors have been trying to boost in confidence in public statements this week. Weepu can take some of the playmaking role on his shoulders from halfback.

Best thing to come from the DC injury (straw clutching here): it's removed all the bold predictions of a certain All Blacks WC victory...which is almost a guarantee of calamity.
I'd also go for Piri at 1st 5. But he's also the best halfback. So can we have two of the little tubster please?

I blame John Key (and Standards & Poor). Fingers crossed for RIchie that no more potential bad news for the government happens before the semi-final. Hopefully even Murray McCully would have blanched at John and Bill's demands for a ritual sacrifice after the ratings downgrade.
