  • Naly D,

I have fond memories of watching cricket on TV3 at my grandparents after school [where I'd go each day] and seem to remember two Andre Adams era ODI's in particular - the one in Wellington against England where we got 244 and they got 89 and the ODI I judge all ODIs against.

  • BlairMacca,

To be honest I thought the same thing when Taylor went and when Styris looked shaky to start with, but he seemed to thrive on the anger. Great quote from The Age

"Styris later revealed he didn't know the ball had gone for six because he was too busy sledging the Australian players. In particular, of course, Johnson. They shook hands after the game."

  • BlairMacca,

I was a bit young to remember the beige days properly (I do remember the theme tune to the channel 9 cricket though). But I remember fondly the young guns days of Pringle (with the highlighter zinc), and Chris Harris (with hair). Followed by the glory days of the 1992 world cup, and the first time I shed tears over sport (but not the last)...

  • Megan Wegan,

Oh, the Young Guns, they were teh awesome. (my first - of many - cricket crush was Gavin Larsen).

I loved last night's game. It completely rekindled my love for cricket, which had been a little on the wane.

But it was so exciting, so tense, so many changes in who was in front.

And is it just me, or has the commentary gotten even MORE double-entendre laden?

  • 3410,

I was only less-than-confident at 106/3. By the time Taylor fell (175/4) they were within a hundred ftw, and I never stopped thinking they were odds on, from that point.

  • Donald Reid,

I was a child of the 80s. We all imitated Lance Cairns's double arm action and many perfectly fine bats had their shoulders lopped off to resemble 'Excalibur'.

And soon as Billy Ibadulla remarked "New Zealand look to be in the control of the game now", we'd lose three wickets in two overs.

... and Chats, the 'one-day miser'.

I always thought that guy should have been the next James Bond.

  • Jimmy Southgate,

@Naly D I was at the stadium for that game vs Pakistan. It remains the greatest game of cricket I have watched. There were probably only 10,000 or so in the stadium, but the noise we made in the last over as we exhorted Kyle Mills to do something he hadn't yet been able to do was epic. I don't think i've ever felt as euphoric after a sporting spectacle.

My early memories of cricket were of my favourite player at the '92 world cup, Rod Latham. I just loved how much he didn't look like a sportsman. Jesse Ryder owes a lot to the man :-)

  • Ngaire BookieMonster,

I'm with Megan, I loved last night's game too. Bond hitting two boundaries at the end just meant poor Mr Monster has to put up with me fawning over him even more.

I've disliked Johnson since watching him throwing down bouncers at the West Indian tail enders in one of the tests before Christmas. So it was nice to see him make a prat of himself and fire Styris up even more.

careful, I'll fight you for him.

I will admit, that when Taylor went out, I thought the game was over. In fact, when Franklin came in at #5, I thought the game was over.

  • Richard Irvine,

So stoked for Styris, he is a true pro, coming in to the team at the last minute, batting further down the order than he's used to, winding up the Aussies and bringing us home. Can't ask for much more. Let's hope they keep him in there.

Also v impressed with Tuffey and Bond's batting, they didn't seem phased by the situation at all, and played some really nice shots.

I was so excited I had to go make a silly joke.

  • Megan Wegan,

Incidentally, I got a bit annoyed (enough to tweet it) at Ian Smith calling Bond an 'unlikely hero'. Aside from the, you know, bowling he has done that with the bat before.

Agreed, he was talking like he's a total bunny with the bat, which he isn't. Bond's no Martin, for goodness sakes.

Plenty of Bond to go around, I'm sure. :D

  • Jimmy Southgate,

I guess Styris, Tuffey & Bond's calmness shows the value of experience.

I still don't disagree with getting Astle & Cairns to move on, but I don't think its time Styris was gone - he has a lot to offer, and more perhaps, than Oram.

  • Rickai,

I listened to it on Radio Sport. Ron Snowden did a good job - he is so much cooler than Wads. The World War One veteran (aka Styris) was awesome.
Incidentally, I never thought Hadlee gave Chatters enough credit. In fact - my enduring memory of the early 1980s was overhearing my Nana calling Paddles "that selfish prick of a man".

    Bond's no Martin

I don't get why Southee keeps getting to go ahead of him, he's only had 1 good innings.

If I tweeted everytime Ian Smith annoyed me, I wouldn't get to watch the game. He shits me at an astonishingly high level.

Because you do absolutely everything in your power to keep him from getting injured

Another cricketing memory, being denied by Paddles for an autograph when I was about 7 at Mclean park after a test match. Selfish prick!

  • Danielle,

I desperately want to use the phrase 'a little bit of howdy doody' at some point today.

I really enjoyed that game. T'other half went to see the Dirty Projectors, while I sat on the couch and had several small heart attacks. It was great.

Also: Johnson's hair. Someone needs to stage an intervention.

You can't do two things at once?

I don't get why Southee keeps getting to go ahead of him, he's only had 1 good innings.

I haven't seen enough of Southee's innings to be able to tell, but in fairness, it's not like Bond is going out there and hitting beautiful shots.
He gets out there and hits the ball cos he has to, and he's not scared.

  • Isabel Hitchings,

I haven't really watched cricket since I used to watch it with my Dad as a kid. I caught the last 30ish overs last night and discovered that I actually rather enjoyed it. Who knew?

When? I recall him hitting the odd boundary but not taking us home in a situation remotely as tense as last night's. (And I'm not saying it didn't happen, just curious as to when it was.)

  • Emma Hart,

The point at which I thought we'd lost it, to be honest, was when I heard Vettori wasn't playing. How were we ever going to cope without Mr Everything? And then we broke Big Jake.

So I gotta say, in addition to all the 'yay Styris', Oz were about twenty runs short of where they should have been, given our patchy bowling line-up.

Also, I'd love vision of Styris's mouth from that confrontation, because I'd love to know what he said that provoked that big 'F-word' from Johnson.

There is some seriously bad hair in the Aussie team. (cough Bollinger cough).

Damn. I knew someone was going to ask me that. (I should have known it'd be you.) I have a recollection of it happening at Wellington, but I can't really tell you much more. (Not blessed with the kind of brain that remembers every sporting thing ever.)

And no, not quite like last night, but he's definitely been there in the dying stages, and held up his end. As it were.

I've had a quick look at his stats, but I can't find the innings of which I speak. Where is my intern when I need one? Hadyn, can I borrow Naly?

  • Megan Wegan,

Ok, wait. I'm not sure this is what I am talking about (who the hell even knows anymore) but here he is taking a T20 to a draw with a boundary off the last ball.
