  • Evan Yates,

Perhaps we could send a battalion of hardened veteran NZ camera operators and OB directors to France to take over the World Cup TV coverage. The cheese-eating-surrender-monkeys will just evacuate (their bowels then the control room) and the pro's can get on with it.

  • uroskin,

The Sunday morning advert ban on television is looooooong past its sell by date. It needs to go ASAP.
Imagine if there was an ad ban on Sunday newspapers, internet sites, radio broadcasts, outdoor advertising on Sunday mornings. Why does TV still needs to be singled out like this?

  • InternationalObserver,

I'm surprised Impey got so fiesty about this. I would have thought 'quiet diplomacy' would have worked better, enabling the Govt to quietly give TV3 an exemption for the RWC without pissing off the Christians. The Govt/nation afterall are keen on 'our national game' being seen free-to-air, so it wouldn't have been a problem. (Can you imagine the Govt saying no? They would have left themselves wide open to the charge of pandering to TVNZ by forcing TV3 to air the matches commercial free)

But instead Impey has made a big noise about it. I'm guessing he's not looking for an exemption for just the RWC ...

  • Dave Patrick,

Hamish McKay.......... *deep sigh* A man who can't string two sentences together without making one of them a cliche. A man who will, at least 3 times in a match, refer to a scrum as a "meeting of the front row committees". A man to whom the word "unbiased" only exists as an uninteresting concept.

Might have to be the radio commentary and the TV pictures methinks......

  • Craig Ranapia,

Feel free to note anyone else who needs congratulating.

OK, time to come out of the closet and own up to my total gay boy crush on Robyn Malcolm. No disrespect to the rest of the cast (especially after last night's kick in the guts Outrageous Fortune), but she just owns every scene she's in with that mix of satin and steel that wins Helen Mirren (or Goddess, as she's known in my house) every award she's nominated for.

And yes, kudos to Rachael King. I didn't really like Davey Darling - but Paul Shannon is definitely a very talented man, and if you're trying to write something that's all thing to all people, you just end up being nothing to nobody.

The only use Hamish McKay has ever served was as the butt of Bill and Ben' s practical jokes on Pulp Sport. I can't decide who's more punchable - Steven McIvor or Hamish McKay. I put it to the floor...

  • David Ritchie,

If Impey's so keen for this to go ahead, why doesn't he take his hardware and staff off shore to, say, Australia, and try broadcasting ads there on Sunday mornings for a while? I'm sure they could show some choice-as toy and fast food ads.

    Thom: don't make me choose.

Its not like I sleep in til 12 every Sunday, and its surely not that I'm off at church. I mean, I've been watching What Now since before Steve Parr had a moustache, I was on What Now a fortnite ago (in the crowd with a kid on my shoulders when they broadcast from Hamtown gardens). I've never noticed a lack of ads.

  • BenWilson,

Since getting MySky, adverts have ceased to bother me at all - they could play them on Sunday to their hearts content. You do have to have the discipline to not start watching until about 30 mins into the test, but you do get the neat bonus of fast-forwarding every goal-kick attempt, the South African National Anthem, half-time, your choice of slow motion biffo, and you don't have to wait to hear from McCaw. Rugby jumped to a whole new level of appreciation for me.

But the temptation to watch the whole thing in arrears should be resisted for the All Blacks. I did that during a night out, and even though my Dad said nothing at all when I picked my boy up, I could tell the outcome just from the spring in his step. The trick is to estimate the ads, so that you hit live for the last ten minutes.

actually that's a good point - why is there a Sunday ad ban when all the people who probably actually want it are at church anyway and not actually watching TV

According to Impey that is exactly what they did do, they went and talked to Maharey, who told them No, ( they also raised that TVNZ got an exemption for the 1999 WRC, still no dice)

  • BenWilson,

Of all the stupid annoying concessions to Christianity that we make, banning advertising on Sunday is one of them that is actually good. What are you guys thinking of? Like I give a rat's arse about broadcaster's profits. Getting exclusive coverage of the World Cup is likely to be well profitable enough, why argue for something STINK?

I mean honestly, how 'objectively alienated' do you have to be to get all bitter about NOT having more advertising?

No ads - but still promos. They can tell you to watch the movie on TV tonight, etc, just can't tell you to buy McDonalds.

The same applies on Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Christmas and ANZAC morning.

  • Duncan McKenzie,

A modest proposal re TV advertising.

Pass a law that requires the amount of TV advertising to be halved but requires advertising rates to double.

Broadcasters get the same money, but have more space to fill.

Surviving ads will have twice the impact. Advertisers need not spend any more. Probably the more annoying cheap ads will go.

Then, a year after that, pass the same law again...

  • Jeremy Andrew,

Why not lead by example - drop ad frequency on the govt owned channels, or just on TV1 , charge more, and watch the advertisers clamour for slots on the channel with so many more eyes watching it.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

If it just me or did anyone else not notice that there's a Sunday morning ad ban?

I didn't notice either, until one day I was wondering why there were so many public service programmes on TV One on Sunday mornings.

I looked up the Broadcasting Act and was shocked and also delighted to see the six-hour Sunday morning ad ban was there.

Remember when there was no advertising on Sundays at all? (I assume this ended in 1989) I remember Sunday evening viewing in the '80s was mostly very bleak.

Wow, then that's a clearcut case of favouring TVNZ surely? I'm surprised he's that stupid.

Like I give a rat's arse about broadcaster's profits. Getting exclusive coverage of the World Cup is likely to be well profitable enough

What business do you run Ben? How can TV3 make the RWC profitable if they can't run ads while the games are on? RWC charge huge fees for the rights - would you rather ads were run or the Taxpayer paid for the broadcast rights?

Pass a law that requires the amount of TV advertising to be halved but requires advertising rates to double. Broadcasters get the same money, but have more space to fill.

heh heh heh. If only selling ads were that simple. Do you know why there are only 5 frankfurters in delipack, instead of the 6 there used to be? It's because Verkers decided instead of putting the price up they would reduce the number of franks in order to keep the price to what consumers can afford. Advertisers don't spend whatever it costs, they spend what they can afford. And if they can't afford enough ads to get the frequency/reach they require then they don't waste their money on a half assed TV campaign.

You mean: too many Dunedin bands on Radio With Pictures??

  • Hadyn Green,

Not only did they bid while knowing about the ad ban they presold their sponsorship packages knowing about the ad ban.

As for Hamish McKay...well Russell already linked to my thoughts. But on the dropkicks we used to have a Hamish McKay watch to see exactly what dumb ass thing he was going to say next. My absolute favourite was his conversations with Frank Bunce at halftime: an exhuberant man with no charisma talking to a quiet man with no insight.

Best commentary team was Ian Jones and Todd Blackadder with Nathan Rarere on the sideline (which actually happened once!).
