  • Don Christie,

(and I mean that in all earnestness)

Oh God. I have only just realised the humour in that statement. Thanks Andrew Ll for pointing it out. Sigh.

blogs.nzherald.co.nz/blog/blogger-bites-back a finalist in the best blog site???

    That seems very MSM leaning.

I did tell his producer why ...

It's all David Slack's fault, basically.

  • Steve Barnes,

Hearty congrats from this desk too.

Agreed (should there be an emphasis on the greed bit?)
I had a look at that "blog" it didn't take long. Out of the ten posts there were only two comments, one of which was telling the author to check his facts before posting. That is just so Herald. :-(
I suppose it's a little early for speculation on what Cunliffe will be offering us in terms of fibre annat but it will have to be something semi spectacular to beat the public perception that Key's offering something remotely possible. fibre to the node is, almost, a done deal. Bigger overseas pipes are already in the planning stage, well at least a MOU, by well.... PIPE and Kordia. So that would mean that any offering would have to be in the "last mile" and if not FTTH then what else? WiFi?

  • LegBreak,

Best news story of the awards for me was www.vorb.co.nz.

Just a shame they didn’t get one more vote.

Tama didn't seem to mind. He spoke briefly about how much has happened for him since last year -- he has a financial partner, and a new car (important, given that the last one burst into flames in the car park of Pak 'n' Save just as he had to drive up to the awards).

Speculation around the traps is that it will be announced in the Budget on the 22nd. Sounds as thought the Nat's policy may have brought Labour's announcement forward as the rumbles were it had been originally scheduled for later in the year.

As for the money involved - well there was the additional half billion the Government discovered it had late last year so odds are that might form the base of it. I'd suspect it'll be slightly more though given the amount the Nat's have put up.

I have no idea (yet) what the form of the policy is though

  • Dave Waugh,

heh funny that Net guide got Vorbs URL wrong..... It's .org.nz NOT .co.nz
Oh as did the Herald who called it vorG instead of vorB!

I'd be very surprised if they relied on the 1/2 Bil being there in a years time.

    Ooops.

  • Jono Baddiley,

Congratulations on the win - nice you got to meet Tama Easton - he's been doing a brilliant job for the NZ cycling community for a long time now, and it seems that it's only been in the last year that it's been recognized. A real demonstration of community-led-content - especially in the video, photo and mobile contribution spaces.

Also, the site is http://vorb.org.nz (although there is a redirect from vorb.co.nz) ;)

Shouldn't Tama Eaton be getting a new bike instead of car?

  • Jackie Clark,

Congrats, PA people. Thanks for providing a site that provokes thoughtful discussion. Even if I don't understand everything that's been said about techo things or have any interest in most of the political stuff, there's still enough content for me to be happy.

  • Belt,

I think I win the laid-back award for a Netguide award. I refused to attend the awards and they sent it to me by courier :) Mind you, that was in the early days when "Internet Awards" were a marketing ploy and I was as distrustful as the next recipient... :)

    Now then.

My memory may be faulty, especially as it is fuelled by a "few" McKenna's by now, but isn't there fibre running along side the main trunk railway lines?

Which begs the question: Did Labour buy that fibre as part of its purchase just recently?

And, if so, does this form the back-bone of its soon-to-be-announced plan?

Personally, I'd love to have anything over 50k/s between 6 and 11pm that currently masquerades as "broadband", but I'm not sure that would make me vote for a party that promises to deliver it all-else-being-equal.

Let's just all go to the beach, go for a bike ride, tramp, ski, dive, and remember why we really live here ;-)

  • Belt,

Hmmm. Just read through the Netguide award winners.

    Comments.

PA: best signal to noise ratio.
Spot on. Corollary: Kiwiblog. Great posts, useless comments.

    Best blog runner up: Aardvark.
FFS. It's nothing but a right wing whinge day after day. Stopped reading that when it turned into a mid-life crisis about life on the dole in a crime infested rural back water with everyone else to blame for it.

    Best ISP.
Where did Orcon go? Did Kordia's purchase make that much of a difference? As a 10 year Orcon customer... not sure if that was a deserved demotion.

    Best Government site: IRD.
Well done. At the same time... WTF? What a sad indicator about life in NZ, right? I guess we DO have the most accountants per head of population, but still.

    In memoriam: Best Home Page.
This used to celebrate the best individual effort of some private plodder who put a great resource on the web out of love for "it", whatever it was. Great example of a previous winner: The Hidden Forest, a compendium of fungi, mosses, ferns et al as found in our forests. These days the best Home Page is Stuff?

    Sad.

Ok, that's me. Exit stage left. Or right. Don't want to offend anyone.

  • Ren,

    Great news.

Am obviously a 'lurker' ... I've been reading Public Address for a while. And since being in London it's the website I go to everyday to catch up on NZ news and opinion ... my starting point at least.

So thanks Russell and crew ........

  • Steve Withers,

I'm relatively new to PA and completely new to blogging generally.

PA is a must-read for me most days. I tend to feel I'm getting more of what I want / need from the informative or issues-based posts and I do admit to struggling with writing about too much personal trivia (I have more than enough of my own)....but PA is always worth the time.

Congratulations to all. If my vote helped, so much the better.

  • Mark,

Well. congratulations I guess. But let's consider this. A blog is not hard to create. Generally, it consists of trite comments with links to more in-depth and better researched sites. It's more about someone's opinion about something which may or may not be important - generally not. It's usually ridiculously biased ideologically (Public Address clearly embarrassingly Labour-skewed), such that it attracts comments from like minded individuals who post their full agreement with the original poster in an obsequious manner as part of the well known "echo chamber" effect. Those commentators and the original poster then quietly congratulate themselves on how clever they have been whilst all the while 99.99% of the general public have no idea that the original post was ever created and if they did know they wouldn't care anyway. Utterly pointless, with the backside licking from the pundits quite nauseating.

  • Kumara Republic,

Mark: politics aside, good blogs have a high signal-to-noise ratio. In other words, not a harbour for bile and puerile name-calling, unlike another well-known blog we're familiar with. The owner of that blog may be a reasonable guy, but unfortunately most of its repsondents don't know when to quit the playground sandpit.

At least in a blog like PA, you're less likely to have a label bull-branded on your forehead.

  • Geoff Lealand,

Well,Mark. There must be some reason why you are here, unless you are some kind of masochist.

The only 'skew' I perceive in Public Address is towards informed debate and intelligent conversation.

  • Julie Fairey,

Congrats to Public Address! Well done those people.

In regards to Mark - what label would you afix then to a comment here about what a waste of time this "utterly pointless" blog is? I hope you type fast, time being money and all that.

Thanks to Joanna too for linking to the stuff at The Hand Mirror about the ALAC advert, "Lisa." As of right now I've yet to have a reply from ALAC or the ASA (other than to acknowledge receipt), and my comment to a story about the advert on the ALAC blog has yet to make it through moderation. Let me assure you it is not at all offensive, but does contain links to the posts up at The Hand Mirror expressing concern about the rape myths the ad perpetuates.
