  • Matthew Poole,

Yes, this will have been more physically severe than September, even if the energy release was less, because it was so much closer to the surface. GNS say the acceleration was a full 1G, against 0.8G for September, so 25% higher speed of movement at ground level. Throw in many buildings damaged and unrepaired from September, and there's no way it couldn't be ugly.

TVNZ running ads with coverage. Classy.

  • Robert Urquhart,

I have a friend who works on a 7th floor in city that I'm worried about. Just heard from another friend who works in the danger zone - OK, but others nearby injured.

  • Craig Ranapia,

OK, so who the hell was reporting that Christchurch Hospital was closed when it wasn't? I know in the circumstances confirming reports like that is hard but damn...lives may depend on (mis)information like that.

I can't figure out where that is. Manchester St?

I think it's the CTV building.

Thanks Deborah; so glad to hear this. Still hoping to hear from others.

(Also for the record - that was me posting as Richard earlier - using a borrowed computer).

  • recordari,

It does get to a point where posting photos and links to such feels very different to last time. As Craig pointed out, for the most part it seems best to let the official reports come through to ensure safety.

It is great to be hearing from those in Christchurch in regards to themselves or their families being safe via twitter though.

Indeed. One of the risks with Twitter in particular is that unsubstantiated info like this spreads like wildfire.

At KiwiCon (hacker conference) in 2009, one of the presentations was on how to "hack" WikiPedia by getting the reputable media to put into print a false rumour started through Twitter. Attendees managed to get it reported that Vic Uni's Pipitea Campus was on fire and had been evacuated, all through Twitter.

Please, anyone who's thinking of retweeting anything relating to the quake, if it sounds like official information make sure you've confirmed it on the Police website or similar. The media sites don't count as fact-checking.

I know it may not be the right time. And I know that it's not that simple. But I want everyone I know and love to move away from there. Okay? Chch no good. NO GOOD.

I feel like I could just zap the people who are overusing the #eqnz tag. Shut the fuck up if you have nothing meaningful to say. But that may well be the stress of waiting for friends to get in touch talking.

Oh fuckity fuck, in floods of tears re-reading text from cousin who quite probably would have been in the Cathedral (a regular port of call during her lunch hour) when the quake hit – if she wasn’t on holiday in Oz. Even the good news makes you cry.
