Matthew I've been hearing that too - the pullout from CTV is purely an evacuation out of the danger area for the Grand Chancellor. That will be REALLY hard to take for family of those inside... (/speculation)

I thought his reply to you was unnecessary quite frankly, quite apart from inducing an ironic laugh. I know he didn’t say it, but I heard “Do you know who I am?”
Anyway, sorry, we should leave this alone. Might step off the conveyer for a while, my heads hurting.

@Matt, a team of Japanese rescue staff flew in this morning to Auckland. Originally the flight was scheduled to go into Chch first, but that was when it was carrying a load of tourists, not rescue workers (and the airport was open).
More will be on their way soon. CNN played TV3's coverage live in Japan so people there were as up-to-date as we were. Amongst the missing are Japanese language students, so they'll be conscious of that as well.
I have a friend who has to go down as his mother is in the middle of all that, suffering from dementia. I feel so helpless to be able to do anything productive for them at the moment.

To answer my own question before, Emma and family are OK. They're at home, and have no power and water, and little phone battery left.
I asked her if she needed details of where to get water, and she replied "pumping station...is pissing out potable water".
So very Emma.

Just looked at his twitter stream. What a fucking pillock, and no apologies for my French. Once again he shoots his mouth off based on his misinterpretation (or outright ignorance) of the law, and then wonders why people call him a dick.
And, in this case, a very abusive, obnoxious dick.A state of emergency grants powers to the controller only within the area covered by the emergency. So nothing could be requisitioned from outside Christchurch or Canterbury (depending on the area of local emergency) without a national emergency being declared. But, of course, he's too busy frothing at the mouth to read the legislation properly - spittle is notorious for its impact on legibility - and, instead, we get that shit.
I'm going back to my blissful ignorance of his rants now.

And given the very high number of multistorey buildings in Singapore, I would have expected that their USAR teams would be pretty well trained.
BTW does anyone know of a good place to read up on building codes and earthquake resistance? I'm wondering about what exactly the required durability/strength of buildings is especially after Kobe, noting that the Forsyth Barr building internal stairs fell (built 1989, I believe).
-
Ultimately USAR is USAR. A collapsed building is a collapsed building, and the training is pretty standardised. More people means more simultaneous rescues, more people to rotate on and off the piles.
Indeed.
And your last two posts made me laugh. I don't believe in either Mr Key, or Ms Kuini Erihapeti, but I do respect their sincerity as human beings and decency in this situation. Unless you acknoledge that, it's pretty hard to make sense of the world.

I feel I should apologise.
Going back a bit, Tamara and Stephen, thank you, that was much appreciated.

Vehemently rejecting the sympathy expressed to somebody else is a novel way of making a catastrophe in another city all about yourself, you'll have to give him (and Ms Coddington) that.

Wasn't Oakland in '89 a huge turning point for earthquake codes in the parts of the world that have such things? Much of what fell in Kobe was built well before the lessons of the (then) next-most-recent significantly fatal "developed locale" earthquake could be digested, after all.

Yup, if you want to see genuine lack of humanity, switch to following the events in Tripoli. While NZ has pretty much 100% rallied to help the victims here, death squads roam the streets there shooting indiscriminately at anyone outside, while an insane leader babbles about dogs stealing his revolution.

Although I notice that our building code revisions were in 1984 and 1992. So I would have thought the Forsyth Barr building would at least incorporate the changes in 1984 (but given the slow nature of design/approval/construction I could be wrong). Presumably Oakland would have been too late to influence the design of the Forsyth Barr building.

Well, Bear Grylls was in the South Island, so...

Sorry for the levity, I hope it doesn't offend.

Completely bizarre. I was going to say "even for her" but on reflection, I'm not so sure.
Page 3 of the spade manual says "When the hole is deep enough, stop."

I'm literally laughing through tears watching that. Others may beg to differ, but your timing seems just about right. Without some light relief, we'd all be damned to hell.

Well Gio, I was hoping my Playcentre jibe to be taken in the similar vein. After all it was David who mentioned why his nipper was under the house. I didn't think David would be hurt.

Yes, I think Gio missed your tone a bit there.

Wow. That's a building that won't be inhabitable, if it remains standing of its own volition.
I'm beginning to wonder if EQC is approaching the point of bankruptcy, given that it's on the hook for the first $1.5b from both of September and yesterday, and also for the balance of yesterday (the reinsurance limit didn't get breached for September) over and above its reinsurance up to $4.8b. It's got $6.5b, $1.5b is accounted for with September, another $1.5b is the "excess" on yesterday, that leaves $3.5b to cover whatever costs there are above $4.8b from yesterday.
Oh, and that doesn't include Boxing Day, which was a separate event as well.Just to lighten the mood :s

Me and Jackie both, I suspect. Apologies then.
