Telecoms behavior once again reminding me of Monty pythons "Great twit of the year" skit.
Given the size of the budget they have to play with, how the hell do they get it so wrong so often?!?!?!?!

  • Nick Melchior,

As far as watching TV downloads on the telly goes, my Pc has a s-video output. I plug that into the telly, the PC's sound card into the stereo, turn it all on and away we go. I've also set up my xbox 360 to connect to the PC, but then realised that the damn thing makes so much noise that I should just stick with my current solution.

Old xbox (not 360) does a pretty good job, a lot quieter too. YouTube actually looks OK.

how so? Barak has indeed been comparing himself to Reagan (both are apparently Great Transformers)- it's one of the things Krugman has been crtical of him for. It's not a lie.

  • Don Christie,

I wish I/S had comments switched on ...

One interesting indicator for C based emissions is how they relate to GDP and economic growth. Whilst net reductions are obviously *the* desirable outcome any efficient growth bodes well for the future (as older technologies get replaced over time).

This 2006 data shows NZ performing only moderately in the GDP / CO2 emitted stakes.

This Environment Waikato report has an abstract that states:

New Zealand does not seem to have achieved either relative or absolute decoupling between GDP and CO2 emissions. Emissions are growing at a higher rate than GDP. Recent data show a slight relative decoupling between GDP and energy demand.

    which is a shame.

The data is a little old, the economy has grown by over 30% since 1999, not sure what the latest Carbon emissions stats are like.

If you're getting given such things as XBoxes & Playstations for your job have you received the AppleTV Mark II?

I'd love to know whether its cool or not. (And yes I am an Apple fanboy so my standards are probably lower).

By the way, the Clinton / Obama stoush is extremely tame (which is a good thing). I really think folks are getting worked up over statements that are simply attacking each other's statements. If you want dirty look back to 2000 and what Rove did to McCain or Kerry.

  • Stuff n Things,

re: the XBox 360 - to be fair it has only been able to play useful video files since a major Nov/Dec update last year. Before then it could only play WMV files (ug). I suppose Microsoft figured they needed an advantage over PS3, so finally allowed for DivX playback. Oh well, good for us (now, if only I could get it to find networked files...)

Nick M - I notice that the main noise from my XB360 comes from the DVD drive, so it's not so bad if you're playing stuff off a USB drive. Oddly enough, it also seems to be quieter when playing CDs vs DVDs...

That's not a copyright infringement, it's possibly a privacy issue though. They should be getting a model release from you to use your image to market er, water.

If you want a copyright rort, send a video clip of some world changing event that you witness to TVNZ. Item 4 of their Terms and Conditions:

I assign all copyright in the footage in perpetuity to TVNZ.

Meanwhile they protect their own copyright pretty assiduously.

Oh come on... Here's the script for the ad:

VO: “Listen to Barack Obama last week talking about Republicans.
BO: “The Republicans were the party of ideas for a pretty long chunk of time there over the last 10, 15 years.”
VO: “Really? Aren’t those the ideas that got us into the economic mess we’re in today? Ideas like special tax breaks for Wall Street. Running up a $9 trillion debt. Refusing to raise the minimum wage or deal with the housing crisis. Are those the ideas Barack Obama’s talking about?”
BO: “The Republicans were the party of ideas.”
VO: Hillary Clinton thinks this election is about replacing disastrous Republican ideas with new ones, like jumpstarting the economy. Putting an immediate freeze on foreclosures and mortgages. Cutting taxes for the middle class. and creating millions of new jobs. With the economy in crisis, we need a president with the ideas, the solutions that get our economy working for all of us. Hillary Clinton. Solutions for America.

    And here's the whole quote:

``I think it's fair to say that the Republicans were the party of ideas for a pretty long chunk of time there over the last 10-15 years in the sense that they were challenging conventional wisdom.''

He also said in the same speech:

`I think we're in one of those times right now, where people feel like things as they are going aren't working. That we're bogged down in the same arguments that we've been having, and they're not useful. And the Republican approach, I think, has played itself out.''

You know something, Neil, I get a lot of shit from the usual suspects for giving the Liarbore Dykeocracy credit where credit is due, and even defending the Evil Demoness Hullun Klark against attacks I consider unfair.

Apparently that's totally out of line in Hillary Clinton's world. Fine, but I guess she's not going to be trumpeting her 'experience' working across party lines in the Senate, or her on the job training in an administration that 'ended welfare as we know it' etc.

Sorry, Neil, however you spin it the Clinton campaign got pinged for telling a big fat lie of ommission -- which may explain why the ad has been pulled. Now, tell me again why my comparison of the Clinton campaign to Rove-ism at its worse is unfair?

Funny, Don, I'd say running outright deceptive radio ads in South Carolina just long enough to get media traction was the anti-McCain Rove playbook to the letter. Why doesn't the Clinton campaign just come all the way out of the closet and put the man on the payroll?

it's basic poltics to make statements made by oppenents look bad. if you want to call that lying fair enough.

but Obama was comparing himself to Reagan to make the campaign point that he will also transform US politics. Fine, that's his message.

But Clinton's line of attack is - compare yourself to Reagan if you want but don't be surprised if there's elements of that comparison that aren't flattering.

  • Idiot Savant,

Don: First, I wouldn't wipe my arse with that Wikipedia data; thelisted emissions bear no relation at all to NZ's actual emissions according to the UNFCCC (and looking at their methodology, its easy to see why). Always use the Inventory Report.

Quibbles aside, we've seen improvements in intensity, with $ of GDP / ton of carbon emitted increasing from $1425 in 1999 to $1608 in 2005 (emissions data from NIR; GDP from the stats.govt.nz time series, constant $1995/96 $). So, we're making more money out of what we emit - but that isn't going to solve our problem. To do that, we need to actually reduce emissions. If we wish to maintain our standard of living, then this will require significant improvements in emissions intensity. But we shouldn't mistake one for the other, or blindly focus on intensity while missing the actually significant statistics.

(We might also want to look at emissions per capita. On that statistic, we've been getting worse, with emissions rising from 17.41 T/person in 1995 to 18.72 in 2005. We are simply emitting too much carbon).

The good news in this is that our previous increases occurred when there was no real policy to stop them, and hopefully as policy is implemented we will see them begin to trend downwards. But it'll take a few years, and there are serious questions as to whether current policy will be enough to push uptake of clean technologies.

  • Stephen Judd,

"Given the size of the budget they have to play with, how the hell do they get it so wrong so often?"

At the risk of never working in this town again, my observation is that their enormous monopoly profits meant that most cockups don't rate. Said monopoly means that they suffer from the same problems as any other large institution, but have less incentive to deal with them. Notice that cockups in the more independently-managed mobile business are rather fewer.

Yes, Neil, I call lying by omission and/or distortion a lie and people who indulge in them liars. Though to be fair, Senator Clinton, her senior campaign staff and everyone connected with that advert may be outright morons.

I also find a wee bit disturbing the class of glib cynicism where we don't really expect any better from politicians aspiring for the top of the greasy pole because... well, that's just what they do. I can see the campaign season here at home is going to require some serious pain-killers.

  • Stafford Lumsden,

So the PS3 won't play back Quicktime files, (isn't Quicktime a proprietary Apple thing?) but it will play DivX files like it's 360 bretheren. Indeed, it will do so much better than the 360.
Is very good for those DVDs that I have ...ahem... backed up to .avi format. Not only that but you can do it all wirelessly, (actually I think you can do that with Xbox, but you don't need MS Windows!) configured properly you can have a little Java program called Azureus (you might know it) running in Ubuntu "acquire" TV programs and the like and then stream it directly to your PS3, much like iTunes and an Apple TV would.

  • Kyle Matthews,

Good post before Craig. Context does matter.

I quite like the movie Primary Colors. A good fun look at the mess that is running for US President. Very entertaining.

But I like my entertainment in this regard to be fiction, not, y'know, reality (yes I'm aware that the writers of the movie were inspired by real events). These people aren't running for Chief Seabed Tiddly-winker after all.

but Obama has been comparing himself to Reagan. That is not a lie. It's a deliberate strategy on his part.

The thrust of Obama's line is "I'm like Reagan in certain ways". The thrust of Clinton's response is "OK, but maybe being ilke Reagan isn't so great". This is political rhetoric from both sides, to call it lying sort of misses the point.
