  • giovanni tiso,

Thank you all for a thoroughly enjoyable evening. We should do it again all the time.

  • David Cormack,

I concur, if you could not leave it another four years please, that'd be grand.

  • Stephen Judd,

We should do it again all the time.

    Reckon.

I would like to apologise to anyone I gabbled at incoherently. In a bid to reconnect with my Hamiltonian roots, I was drinking by the jug. (The Standard commentariat would approve.) Also, in 41 years, I had never ever won a prize at a function before. This was very exciting to me.

One reason we should do it more is that while I was pleased to put faces to many names (not least Keir), the night just wasn’t long enough to get around the crowd properly. I’d enjoy attending something every couple of months, say.

It was good to have the first decent laughs I've had in three weeks, anyway.

  • Hilary Stace,

Russell, it reminded me what a very kind and generous person you are.
It doesn't matter if we have all have our little disagreements from time to time.

And Jackie C, if you are reading, there was a magnificent Crown Lynn swan there, which was a bit like you being there in spirit.

  • Matthew Littlewood,

Keir Leslie does not look at all like you think he does.

I can vouch for that. I can also vouch he is brilliant company. Such a shame I couldn't make this...work commitments proved too difficult to get out of. Maybe next time.

Boys toilets were a lot less appealing. Decoration was pared back, almost minimalist. Two blocks of soap and a waste paper basket made for a very functional experience.

Or a few experiences, beer was by the jug, after all.

  • Geoff Lealand,

Sounds great. Is there a podcast available?

Stephen: From my observations, it seems more like bulk RTDs these day. Except for rugby days at the Waikato Stadium (go The Chiefs tomorrow night)

  • Sue,

wee maybe we should all have a lawn bowls afternoon every couple of months, or something equally designed around good company good location and good prices.

In other news ... Keir Leslie does not look at all like you think he does.

And, apparently, neither do I. I get that quite a bit...

That sounds like a great idea, except for one thing -- would I have to actually be able to play? I think I've rolled a real full size lawn bowl maybe once in my life... as long as I can do this without the scorn of the competent, or perhaps merely sip my beer and murmur "well played" from the sidelines, I'm in.

  • Russell Brown,

Oh, and in other happy news, we’ll be able to give $1000+ to the Christchurch City Mission, thanks to the raffle, donations and Toby Manhire very generously chucking in his fee.

And I’m back in Auckland, tired but happy at the end of a long month of talking and organising and looking forward to a quiet and restful weekend.

What’s that? Oh … I appear to have invited a whole lot of people around for a barbecue tomorrow. How did that happen?

I must marinate a large piece of lamb and soak some chickpeas.

And Craig was just as eccentric as I expected him to be.

Indeed. I had a great rave with him and Steve Parks. Very nice to put faces to the names.

Also nice to meet Ross Mason, who actually looked like I imagined he would.

  • Steven Price,

Some personal highlights, for those who missed them:
-- Toby's emails from the good folks of Clark County Ohio, expressing some disagreement with the Guardian's campaign to get liberal Brits to encourage them to vote Bush.
-- Emma's well-made point that, yes, it was terrible that people died in the quake, and fair enough for the media to cover that, and no offence or anything, but the most pressing issue for many people in Christchurch quickly become access to a loo
-- David's suggestion that Craig's attire (the promised bow-tie and braces) had been copyrighted
-- Craig's retort that he'd be stupid to take fashion advice from an engineer
-- Emma's newfound repudiation of the "top down" approach
-- Craig's agreement that a "bottom up" approach was preferable.
Guess you had to be there. I'm glad I was.

I so wanted to steal that.

Can we all come? Or not. I think I should stop partying with PAS people, it's the third time Emma has come to Wellington, and the third time in a row we've been thrown out of a bar because the staff want to go home.

(Though, Gio, Jack, and Stephen, there's a GREAT story involving the city to sea bridge, a police woman and a duck....)

  • andin,

as long as I can do this without the scorn of the competent,

All you have to remember is which is the weighted side, and never roll up with the weighted side out, unless you are betting on the game next to you and want to spoil an end.
