wow, I spend all day banging on about NZ on Air and whether Elemenop has the same cultural signifigance as Rod Derret, and I pop over here before actually doing some work to find all hell has broken loose.
So, yes, having read the thread, I agree with the apology consensus, but should also add I was concerned at this too, but thinking it was intended to be humourous, or I was missing a relationship of some sort between the posters, said nothing. If that was not the case, I'd suggest a second apology.

3410,
OK [deep breath]...
I plead guilty to not calling out every instance of a comment that could be considered abusive. That said, everyone else needs to share that.
I responded to one particular comment from one particular commenter (not Deborah, as noted above), because I thought he was being a little bit off. In retrospect I failed to consider the wider context of the discussion, but in my defence, I'm sometimes too busy to do the thorough textual analysis of long threads which would ensure avoidance of this ever happenning.
To reiterate, if there was any implication that I was taking sides, it was not intended, and I'm sorry if it looked like that. I feel kinda bad about this myself, since I was actually trying to help limit nastiness, not defend it.

merc,
Hi, I'm home, I knew you R. and Che would take off with the THEATRE! money, but I'm OK with it now, really, I am. It's out there in the World now and that's a good thing, I only ask that if anyone wants to use it at their place of work, they shout it and think of the Guinea Pigs, and beret wearers and out of fashion deamon out there, struggling to heat their garrets.
-
And everyone, I know I made an issue out of it all, with reason, but nevertheless, let's remember that Craig is a very brave man.
-
Thanks for the link to 'Theatre' since being a newbie I had no blardy idea.
-
um. that theatre thing is as new as pa system.
we're like, evolving and all hip and modern and that.
except merc [small voice] we think he might be a middle-eastern terrorist type... it's the mustache.
-
merc,
Bastard, I know where you were born, it's a 'tash and only for the WP Program, indeed it's a beard now...why am I telling you this, am I MR Z? No, I am merc and you and R. whose gone off on retreat-without-tech (bastard monk shaven guinea pig) have cornered all the palm oil on THEATRE! You better enjoy that Porsche my beret friend, I may be in exile but I know some hampsters who know some cats, capiche!
-
3410,
Che,
Nice wiki entry, but shouldn't the definition include explanation of the term's origin as being an unintended corruption of the idea of shouting "Fire!" in a crowded treatre? Also thanks for the "Thou shalt not kill" tip, yesterday. "Just a band"; now that's zeitgeist!
-
3410,
er... "Thou shalt always kill", I mean.
-
the cats and the rodents don't mix. you are putting me off the scent, mr sneaky rpg-toting agent of secret spoken words.
-
merc,
We're talking hampsters, killer hampsters, the size of cats, they put them down your trousers it's terrible. Look, I'm reasonable, you let R. know that you're from The Agency and we're good, the THEATRE! thing, that's nothing, no more mention of RPG's you know that stuff is traceable on the web, look one day I'll take you for a nice drive in the SEL, out here we go see the forest, it's very nice this time of year, lots of mushrooms for the family, nice.

RE: definition of theatre
Assoc-Prof Jen Hay (Department of Linguistics, University of Canterbury) tells me that "I call theatre on this thread" is to use it as a noun, not a verb. Apparently "I theatre this thread" would be using it as a verb.
Not that I noticed anything amiss, myself.
-
dammit... i knew i was right the first time round. pleased respectfully tell archdeacon hay, grandmistress of the spoken word, high priestess of the plains, that "theatre" will henceforth be a noun.
but lo! it is a wiki, and she could just change the blimmin thing herself, because, lo! like, that is the way the most mighty intended it to work.
-
lo!
Lo? Lo?!! Lo??!!!
You're not retreating from Aragorn into Elessar, are you Che? I much prefer the Strider personality.
-
In context, "theatre" may be best described as neither noun nor verb but simply as an ejaculation.... "semantic broadening" is particularly choice, since it's such a specialised usage.
We also need to register (verb) to "palm oil"- attempt to palm off unwanted goods in an unctous manner; to have greasy hands; to shake anothers hand with greasy hands while perched on one's laptop quaffing a naughty, half-naked riesling... nope, you'll have to do it che. -
Speaking of Palm Oil, a Malaysian company is advertising it on BBC World. Almost spat out my tea when I first saw the ad the other night.
-
The use of theatre in terms of "I went into theatre to have a strange lump removed" is also appropriate to the interweb, IMO. While the use of Palm oil as a hand lubricant is beyond my experience.
-
meh. when the committee sorts out what it is we'll tidy up that ejaculation, exclamation, whatever.
-
merc,
Is it a verb to "make a call" in the context of say,
She made the call, the ball was out?
To call down something on someone, like "I call down my wrath upon ye", is that not a verb? Plus in the vernacular, "to call on something" is to pronouce it something other, the "pronounce" bit is surely a verb, neh?
I thought verbs were action words, noun's namers. I think we may be being hoodwinked out of the franchise Che, I say we stand firm.
We are not naming the comment THEATRE!, we are call THEATRE down upon the theatre making comment, it is an invocation against the Ghost of THEATRE!.
Like "break a leg". -
Well I certainly admit to not fully understanding the full nuances of use of 'theatre', but here's my opinion, for what its worth:
Rob Stowell wrote:

I also don't really buy that it's an ejaculation. If the use was something like:
"THEATRE, this is a strange thread", or "by theatre, I can't believe I'm having this conversation" or "oh theatre, that hurt", then sure.
But when you yell out 'theatre" in a crowded theatre, it still remains a noun you are yelling out, just like if you yelled out "fire" you'd be yelling a noun, and if you yelled out "run!" you'd be yelling a verb.
merc wrote:
Is it a verb to "make a call" in the context of say,
She made the call, the ball was out?Things like 'make a call', 'call down', 'call up', or 'call one's bluff' could be argued to be phrasal verbs - though that doesn't stop the 'call' inside 'call one's bluff' being a verb, and the 'bluff' from being a noun.
In order for something to be a good candidate for a phrasal verb, it should probably have sufficently semantically opaque semantics that it is hard to split it up.
A: "What exactly did he call?"
B: "me up"or:
A: "What exactly did he call"
B: "my bluff"are both weird. But, from my admittedly limited understanding of what it actually means, 'call theatre' is semantically transparent, so that this makes okay sense:
A: "what exactly did he call?"
B: "theatre"like:
A: "what exactly did he call?"
B: "fire!:It's possible you could make a case that "call theatre" is a phrasal verb (though I'm not persuaded of that), but there is no way you can make a case that 'theatre' itself is a verb (which is what the wiki claimed).
I'm therefore standing my ground!
-
merc,
Choice, thanks for that, however when you call THEATRE! on someone's comment, it's because they are being theatrical (overly laden dramatics, hand to brow stuff, doth protest too much), so in that sense it's not like Fire!
For example,
Comment: I want to say notwitstanding, that I was joking when I called you are complete witless moron.
Response: THEATRE!
It's like an LBW appeal, sort of. -
i am demanding that assoc prof hay amend that wiki, immediately!
-
Careful Che, don't upset an acca. They'll be memos and points of order and who knows where it will all end!!!
-
merc,
Hang tough Che, it could be a verb, don't worry, your reputation is intact, you're just getting the jitters. R. will be back Monday, he will know what to do. How long have you had this thing for academia? Hamishm, you are right, 25% (my 25%) can make people do strange things. I think we need Simon to daw up a contract and a 12 month business proposal for NZOnAir! funding.
I need to talk with R.
I am a little worried that the original band culture that we had when we wrote THEATRE! may be compromised and we may get called sellouts, but to keep the momentum going I think we need to globalize, I for one see a place for THEATRE! at Sundance, maybe BDO, I'm feeling it's a little restricted here in NZ anyway. Christ R. would have to be at an indusrty retreat lock down. -

But I daren't assert such bold authority - especially since not everyone seems persuaded by my point of view, and since there seems to be some dissension about it's actual use...

It's like an LBW appeal, sort of.thanks for the clarification. This is different from what I understood from the wiki (and different from what you were arguing in your previous 'make a call' description). I'm afraid it still doesn't make it a verb though...
It seems like a comment on the status of what the previous person said (like: rubbish! farce! own goal! leg before wicket! - all of which are nouns). In your own description, you say it's because they are being theatrical - so 'theatre' is a description of what the previous comment was.
It could be a verb if it was serving as a request (stop! shut up!), as in "please can you theatre now". But then this seem quite a strange semantic extension of the word, because you are using a description of the current state rather than the desired state to issue the request.
Sheesh. What DO they teach in schools these days....
