My one and only time on the panel was a few years ago, when as Chair of the Eden Albert Community Board (which had Eden Park in its area), I was invited on for a brief interview about the costs of the works that were going on around Eden Park; the Sandringham Rd upgrade, the Kingsland Rail Station widening, the Billy Apple artworks etc. All of which was causing some angst – all these millions for what?
I primed myself with the facts before hand, and managed to clear up a few things before one of the two men on the panel said something about it all (the many million$) being good and great. I retorted that ‘Gentlemen, it’s *just* a game.” Cue sharp intake of breath and the briefest of silences before Mora politely thanked me and rang off.
I’ve never been back on so I guess I’m in the same camp as Bomber. Lesson: never suggest rugby is ’just’ a game on NatRad.

Why won't the PM front on Morning Report? In fact, he's fairly reticent, as most National ministers seem to be, of fronting to the media.
We see McCully on the World Cup, Brownlee on occasion over the Christchurch rebuild, Joyce on Transport and English. Where are the rest? We never see Tollie, we never see Power (and he, more than most, should be justifying some of the things National are doing).
I have spent the past year, since Key last came on my show, trying to get him back on. I have repeatedly been fobbed off and now his Press Secretary won't even bother answering my emails.
Now I don't expect the PM to make appearing on a radio show on an obscure radio station with a small audience a priority, I would have hoped that, given enough notice, he could find time in his schedule to come on and answer some questions about what the National government is doing, That's fifteen minutes, rather than the hour of fluff and nonsense on Radio Live, or his breakfast appearance on The Rock. Clark managed to find fifteen minutes per week to front on bFM to talk current affairs; Key switches to Tony Veitch on Radio Sport. At least he knows his audience.

Re: Bomber's 'simplistic' bombastic message. It's all very well coming up with a complex analysis, but ask any competent craftsperson: for practical solutions to real problems, simple and effective is best. Don't overcomplicate things, or you weaken them.
E.g. I reckon the one single aim of the occupy movement should be to open up all the prisons. Start by freeing people. You don't need to disband the police. Trained professionals who can impartially resolve disputes are handy to have around. But people should be free.
However, the occupy movement doesn't even need one single aim. It's much better off with none. Common cause.

Yes well, when we thought that various cultural anecdotes were different aspects of the same creatorish impulses, life was so simple. Now we know (unless you like lying to yourself) there is no meaning to being here.

Yes, seriously. And, no, there is no meaning to being here but the ones we make.
The people in prisons are real people. They have as much right and responsibility to be free as anyone else. We should open up the prisons and deal with them like adults, not lock them away in hiding and pretend they don't exist or don't matter.
What's so outrageous about that?

Campbell Live has the same problem, which rather undermines the claim that Mediaworks has some craven quid pro quo going with the government.
And that really is the issue. The Prime Ministers and other senior ministers will not front for serious questioning about what they're doing.

So what do you think should be done about it? What incentives/disincentives are there? Consider them the way they consider a recalcitrant beneficiary.

Bomber might not be serious in calling him a meth addict but there are some regulars at the Stranded seriously calling him a psychopath, a sociopath, and an alcoholic. Seriously bizarre.

I've stopped reading the Standard. There's probably still some good stuff there, Redlogix is a great writer, but the comments are no better there than at kiwiblog.

A simple process:
1 Identify your options.
2 Assess the consequences of those options and sort them into 'good' and 'bad' according to relevant criteria.
3 Choose the best option from the 'good' options for that situation, or at least the one that does the least harm.
Whether you're solving a painting problem or a political one, I suggest the process is sound.

On Bomber, as someone who doesn't buy into his hatred of John Key, I commonly find his rants (in a pejorative sense) on RNZ unnecessarily over the top and unbalanced. I presume he is making the most of the platform and going 'all out'.
It could undoubtedly be handled better, but I wouldn't be surprised to find they have asked him in the past to tone it down, but he couldn't or wouldn't.
Does RNZ pay people to appear on The Panel?
