  • Islander,

Martin, as far as I know, not so - but I will sure as hell be checking tomorrow in the 3 areas my at-risk family live in- and thank you for the pointer.

  • Russell Brown,

Maybe its time to start talking & strategising on ways around this in forums other than this?

You guys need a private group. Invite me.

  • Russell Brown,

Oh, and I forgot to thank (again) Mikaere for making me look good by helping out with my whaikorero at the beginning of the weekend.

The hosts were impressed. I also managed to get through most of the te reo part without looking at my notes. It has actually motivated me to do something about learning at least ceremonial Maori. Pure self-interest of course: I just love speaking on marae.

  • giovanni tiso,

For the record: I cannot log into gravatar, none of your gravatars appear black to me, I cannot bring myself to join the blacking out on Facebook (it was done for Eluana Englaro, that's a whole 'nother level of cause). Is it okay for you guys if I walk into a record store and pelt the owner with rocks instead?

  • Islander,

OooGiovanni! I so have a little provincial store owner for you to pelt!

I'm pretty sure black Jesus would have something to say about that.

  • Don Christie,

and just for the record, I am getting over my technical deficiencies by simply declaring my avatar the 'new black'.

  • 81stcolumn,

This may be a little too smart for its own good but a word for the year may be "92asty"

  • Robyn Gallagher,

I tell you what, it was fascinating watching the #blackout unfold when I checked my interwebs during breaks at Webstock. It one stage @starlajo leaned over and showed me @stephenfry's blackout.

BTW, Webstock '09 is brilliant. The Town Hall is already buzzing with all sorts of webiliciousness.

  • Tom Beard,

I thought it was a fairly overt reference to the traditional symbol of anarchism, the black flag?

I thought that was the circle-A symbol? Or am I relying too much on Aro Valley graffiti and the back-packs of adolescent pseudo-punks?

But anyway, I'd have thought that the "blackout" reference was just because that's what we call it when the lights go out. And for many people, being cut off by their ISP will have pretty much that effect.

  • slarty,

I was discussing over the weekend with various people - including the head of IT for the whole government

It would be a really nice surprise if Dr M actually did something. Generally we do our best to ignore the piffle that comes out of the Ministry of Administrative Affairs (aka SSC)... GSN, GLS...

    Yes, Minister.

    Testing... testing...
    What would black jesus do?

Give the Southern Baptists the heebeejeebee's methinks. Mind now there's a you know, black man in the White house possibly they are busy changing all and every picture of a white jasus with flowing locks to a Sylvester look-alike.

How about some offline civil disobedience. Since nearly everyone who works in IT opposes section 92, why don't we all just call in sick on the same day and see what breaks without anyone to fix it..

Day without a Gay was attempted in the States as a protest against Prop8. Unfortunately due to a variety of reasons it didn't work out so well. I think if you were to do Day without a Geek and every geek was committed, I'd think you'd get quite some errr traction? attention?

You mean there were reasons beyond the brain-boiling lameness of it all? Might have helped if there was an Anti-Prop 8 Campaign Without Naive Idiots In Charge Day every day when it really mattered...

  • Christopher Dempsey,

Ummm well, there's plenty (well, ok, one) of NYTimes stories on how the young thought of the idea and in tweeter style put it into plan. The fags in the clubs - they got political after they realised they'd been snookered by the Mormons . So they thought, let's have a Day without yada yada.

From what I understand the reasons were varied; people needed the money; they weren't out at work; they couldn't do it because they didn't have the leave.

Sometimes ideas fly, sometimes they flop. Sometimes Muldoon and Birch just rammed them through like English/Key/ and a floating third depending on the issue (Collins/Bennett/Ryall etc) do. The young clubbers? They have experienced campaigning for a half-sucessful day, so my hope is there's enough who campaign for smart moves that'll be successful for a week.

  • TracyMac,

Leaving aside all the very worthy discussions right now, can I just say those Cab Voltaire Kora remixes are fantastic.

Must get my hands on it.

  • Nic Steenhout,

Continuing on the somewhat OT thread hijacking, I'll make my first post on PA ;)

It was great meeting all these great folks at Foo this year. Russell, thanks for mentionning Sacha to me, so I could hunt him down. Sacha, thanks for letting yourself be hunted down :) And for the great convos. It had been a long time I hadn't chatted about disability stuff at that level.

Martin, fancy meeting you here :) I was telling him a few of the stories of rather disapointing interactions I've had with our local DPA, which I think you've been aware of over the years.

Many things -- but strategic incompetence, political naivete and deep denial about the nature and consequences of same is not among them. Especially when the dignity and integrity of real families was at stake, and anyone who didn't have their heads up their arse to their shoulders should have known Prop 8 was going to be hard fought -- even if every black voter in the state stayed home, and not a single Mormon penny flowed to the pro-campaign.

Wearing another bloody ribbon doesn't mean half as much to me as reality-based, results-focused political action that gets results.

So what he means here is "no, nothing really."

  • Peter Ashby,

In terms of what people in IT can do as a protest, is not possible to refuse to do IP address lookups to ID people? or to 'break' that system so nobody else can? Obviously you would want to check the details of your employment contract first, perhaps couch it as a work to rule?

  • Samuel Scott,

this is all rather exciting. I didn't know what twitter was until about a week ago. Hmmm I still don't quite get it.

    Still though, I'll protest anything.

That kind of comes under the heading of "we had to break the Internet to save it"
