  • Simon Poole,

Argh! I missed Outrageous Fortune as our antenatal class got moved to a Tuesday because of the long weekend - where are the priorities people?!. I'll have to catch up with it later.

  • Paul Litterick,

Agree with you about Metro. It was getting too much like the giveaway rags, all gloss and froth, but it has returned to real stories. It will put the Listener to shame.

  • giovanni tiso,

It will put the Listener to shame.

The Listener's own editorial staff has got that one well covered.

  • Geoff Lealand,

The moment of Van and Munter constructing a garden shed was a gem. True Blood was pretty magnificent last night too--I always suspected there was something dodgy about Renee, the faux-Cajun character. But I can't bear to think that Lafayette (my favourite character) has come to a sticky end.

I have started distributing notices about Media 7 to our media teachers list, so there should be an increase in the viewing figures(not that Nielsen would notice, though!)

  • Kerry Weston,

Loved how OF kicked off with door-whacking, coitus interruptus, as the new cop erupted into the show. All we need now is for Wolf to come back.

  • Jo S,

There's also a nice piece by Sarah Daniell about how Peter Bromhead got the sack and a Qantas award for outstanding achievement in the same week.

Boy, definitely reading things too fast (back after lunch before heading into the lab) - read that as "a nice piece by Sarah Daniell about how Peter Bromhead was in the sack ..."

  • Stephen Judd,

The Listener's own editorial staff has got that one well covered.

Robyn Gallagher noted earlier this week that the Listener should rename itself "Concerned Grandparents' Weekly".

I'm not sure if Grant Bowler's career in US television is going to allow for that.

obyn Gallagher noted earlier this week that the Listener should rename itself "Concerned Grandparents' Weekly".

Good one! Another renaming could be "The Deafening Silence"?

Concerned White Affluent Grandparents' Weekly, surely?

  • Stewart,

I unkindly wondered if Pamela Stirling has a thing for Gareth Morgan, given as how he seems to have become the Oracle of Teh Listener.

Used to read it pretty much cover-to-cover...now it is just for doing the crossword with My Darling while we breakfast in bed on a Saturday.

I may have to check out Metro again - I've only browsed it at the dentists' in the last few years.

  • Russell Brown,

Also, in the same issue of Metro our own Damian Christe has a nice little story on "Green" Dean Williams in his new guise as an ethical Cambodian bar owner.

And ... The Listener. Having forced myself to wade through most of the interview with George Friedman, I cannot see why he and his book would have deserved even a single-paragraph review, let alone been stuck on the bloody cover of the magazine this week.

Terence O'Brien had it right: Friedman is an irrelevant cold warrior preaching to the choir. His advice for us little New Zealanders was as patronising as his grasp on global economics is slender. It was just embarrassing, both in terms of the rhetoric and the editorial decision to make it a cover story.

  • Tom Semmens,

I tell you what is choice - inorganic collection week!!!!!

People have no idea what they are throwing out, or are to lazy to care.

I just went and gathered up 24 planks, finished unpainted pine, 2 metres long x 20cm wide x 25cm think. Thats has got to be $250-$300 timber easy. That plus another hundy at least of finished moldings, fence palings, a saw horse... The list goes on.

And I've collected at least the same dollar value again as firewood. Jeez, most of the houses I was collecting from had woodburners, cos I checked when I was hiesting their flatscreens... It is only an hour with the axe to reduce to fire box size people!!!!!

Someone who used to do a bit of reviewing for the Listener thought that the current version should be renamed "Luxury problems". As an ex-staffer, I couldn't possibly comment ...

  • Ian MacKay,

From the time my son was about 8 he and I would race to read to be first to read the Listener. At 20 I gave him a subscription to read while away at Varsity. Now 5 years later neither of us bother and subs have lapsed.

The bully tactics used by John Key's advisers, Crosby and Textor, is a bit daunting! Well worth a look.

  • Alec Morgan,

Crosby Textor are the personification of bullying creeps. I almost fired off a sharp email to them, but rethought, those pricks might come after me too! as I would have to use my real name in such correspondence.

CT enabled the Nats to lie their way into office and dare to sue one of our few journalistic treasures-Nicky Hager. If you do not concur with me who ya gonna nominate? The list of toadies is long, as evidenced by Sean Plunkett and K. Ryan on RNZN today (employing Hooten and Griffen in obviously conflicted roles). To boot, TVNZ studios would have needed extra cleaning after whaleblubber on Close Up.

  • giovanni tiso,

Someone who used to do a bit of reviewing for the Listener thought that the current version should be renamed "Luxury problems".

One of the recent cover stories was entitled "Will The Recession Kills Our Body Obsession?", and one had to wonder whether by "our" they meant society at large, or the editorial staff. Since they made the publication 100% irony-free, I fear the former.

  • Emma Hart,

Seeing as a 22-hour play-list on random has just chosen to play 'Gutter Black' at me, I feel compelled to say that with the arrival of each new season of Outrageous Fortune I feel a sense of dread, that maybe this one won't be as good, that they'll have lost it. And the more pregnancies, the more that feeling grows.

These people are geniuses. And I welcome the return of Hayden Bloody Peters.
