My mother's old enough to remember the Shirley Temple phenomenon (born 1930). Suggests that, while there was certainly a good deal of fandom/adulation, this was by no means universal. Boys at my mother's primary school, for instance, tended to deride young Shirley as a bit of a spoilt brat and this apparently represented a somewhat broader feeling among a section of the community.
I tend to feel we've been living under a bit of a Boomer-centric orthodoxy over the last three decades (in terms of our understanding of inter-war and post-war social history). And there's no doubt pre-Boomer New Zealanders have been treated rather crudely and contemptuously. Some of the commentary in the NZ media following Temple's death has certainly been in that mould of condescension (haven't read your article yet, Geoff, so can't comment on it :-) ).

Chchch is Pumping!
Chchch folk can check out the excellent Gap Filler enabled ’Inconvenience Store’ in Cathedral Junction – True to form the opening was in the middle of the Storm of the Century – that takes real planning and dedication!
The Inconvenience Store hosts Masha’s Impossible Products until Sunday
…and next week, March 11-16 is Bridget’s Two-Hour Shop. The Instant TC3 Land Stabiliser (one teaspoon per acre)
was an obvious big seller.

Taste Records, owned by the late Dave Perkins, bless his soul. It had a listening booth with extractor fans so you could get in the right state of mind to *understand* the music.
Thanks Simon , yes those listening booths were good and they didn't seem to mind you listening to whole LPs .

* Disclaimer: I don't actually have 'sets" as such. I just listen to music on my computers by myself.
Well played.

for youse DJs and the dancers whom remember the heady days of yesteryear...
a pretty choice Grant Nelson remix of the classic T-Coy Carino
https://soundcloud.com/grantnelson/t-coy-carino-gn-private
and Greg Churchill's mint remix of This Is Ska
https://soundcloud.com/greg-churchill/longsy-d-this-is-ska-greg
both perfect for the home computer mixologist or them that play out to the elderly, these are possibly not youth friendly - though both are idiot and violence free

The Tom Morello - Ghost of Tom Joad, ... makes me think of Jimi Hendrix, which leads into this. The upcoming biopic where Hendrix will be played by none other than Andre Benjamin of Outkast fame. Will be interesting to see how he pulls it off.

No disgrace in leaving before the encore.
Yes there is. I mean, I've done it myself a few times, but I don't feel good about it. :)

Bought a few records from Taste thats for sure, and to RB, Boss probably just plays too long sets. It is no longer 1978. Some friends my age went and were happily surprised having thought Brooce was just some sort of Westie.
I notice he grabbed four horn players from a band I have liked since their 70s inception, New Jersey’s “Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes”, and Jake, to help replace one Clarence!

Nice! I've got the original vinyl of both of these.

In those 'DJ like no one else is listening' moments can come subconscious pure genious. I'd love to see a track list for one of these sets.

I had a little side bet about the song Springsteen would do, in light of songs he had done for other countries. I went for Dobbyn's Loyal. Close but no cigar.
Anyone else had a guess?. -

LIKE.
Great, great book. My top 3 in no particular order, The Grapes of Wrath (where the character Tom Joad comes from of course), For Whom the Bell Tolls, and the Autobiography of Malcom X. I need to get back into reading those book thingys.
-
YAMIS : I need to get back into reading those book thingys.
Ah yes.. those thingys...the luxury of retiring to your own space without pressure to buy, beg or borrow; to open the pages and visit another world...
This URL links Steinbeck, Guthrie to Springstein / Costello / Morello / the Mumfords
The book itself is also on order with the excellent Auckland Library system....one of the better (socialist) things that came from council amalgamation...as is his laconic "We Meant Well : how I helped lose the battle for the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people" ;-) -
No disgrace in leaving before the encore.
The whole encore phenomenon drive me nuts. Artists that do two or three I want to throw things at.
That is all.

Bugger, I missed that. Well never mind it just goes to show that, sometimes, Russ and I have similar ideas.
I can almost hear Russell running around screaming... "NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!"
