  • Craig Ranapia,

    whose soundtrack Lorde has curated.

How do you “curate” a soundtrack, as opposed to putting together an album of as much music from the film as you can afford to get sub-rights for? (Hell, I'm enough of an old coot to be thoroughly bewildered by the "soundtrack" full of music that was never in the film, never intended to be.)

Good lord there are a few videos out this week. Emily Littler of Street Chant has a new EP coming in her Emily Edrosa guise. First song:

Dude, she was commissioned to choose the songs for the soundtrack.

Not bad for a 17 year-old, especially given that just being on that soundtrack gets every artist halfway to a hit.

But good point: how many of the songs actually appear in the film? That's well outside my area of understanding.

Some of us Belle & Sebastian fans would have been pretty stoked about Caribou too, just quietly.

True enough. Arcade Fire isn’t going to be the next One Direction, but it did them no harm having the pretty good ‘Abraham’s Daughter’ playing over the end credits of The Hunger Games (and on its rather successful OST). And if I ever end up ruling a fascist dystopia, they’re definitely writing my national anthem…

  • Alan Perrott,

well, I'd swap everyone on that Laneways bill for just one Richard Hawley gig. I'd also love to erm, curate a soundtrack - sounds like the best job in the world; a mixtape with pictures.

otherwise quite tickled to find this track in a bargain bin, an Issac Hayes production...

  • Simon Chamberlain,

So from acts I've seen: I'd rather have Caribou than Belle & Sebastian, he's fantastic live. I saw St Vincent with David Bryne and collectively they were excellent, she should be good on her own. Alan, I've seen Hawley a couple of times and he didn't really move me.

Plenty of good stuff there that I haven't seen; shame it's only in Auckland.

    Oh, stop it.

I saw St Vincent play Glastonbury this year on the live stream and thought it would be great to be there hearing it. Lots going on.

They did try Wellington side-shows a couple of times, but it didn't work. The logistics of an Auckland stopover are a lot better than trying to take the show elsewhere within NZ.

    A late-breaking Soundcloud gem.

It's The Reflex's birthday, and also that of some guy called Bo Saris. So this edit got posted.

    Delightful funk.

Russell, don't you follow everything I post here? I'm not a cello fan, but he's doing things with it.

That's not one of Ben Sollee's better songs, but I it remixes well.

I think I've said this before, but one of the things I appreciate about Lorde's better songs are the great electro sounds with her awesome alto. I get really tired of wispy high-pitched female vocals with grubby electronica (I love Massive Attack - they're guilty too).

Lorde is a refreshing change. Also Ladi6 with the stuff she did with Shapeshifter et al, and Tali.

Love the Stevie Nicks article too.

These things seem to be 90% obscenely hard work, carefully cultivated contacts, sound instincts (virtually indistinguishable from inspired guesswork) and just a dash of good luck for seasoning. :)

  • John Armstrong,

I love Jakob. And when I say that, what I mean is that I love Jakob. For various reasons, including the fact that they providing the soundtrack to me falling in love with my wife, their beautiful music means a great deal to me, and it is such a grand thing when an artist you love does not let you down.

What an honest piece of film, too.

  • Robyn Gallagher, in reply to Russell Brown,

My understanding is that the film itself only has an orchestral score, with "Yellow Flicker Beat" and a couple of other songs from the soundtrack playing on the closing credits. Let's blame Prince's Batman soundtrack - popularising a soundtrack record also that had songs "inspired by" the film.

BTW, I don't think you need to have an understanding of the Hunger Games to appreciate the song. It is ostensibly about Katniss Everdeen's story, but can also serve as a bit of commentary on Lorde's life. "They used to shout my name, now they whisper it." Aw yeah.

And this is interesting - "Yellow Flicker Beat" was co-written by the usual team of Lorde and Joel Little, but this time it was produced not by Little, but by Paul Epworth, best known for his Grammy-winning work with Adele.

It is. There is inevitably artifice in getting the shots for a video like that, but it feels authentic, and committed to the making of the music.
