My daughter Geena "Real Life" as one of her presents for her second birthday - it was a three disc collectable released to coincide with the American Tour - two of the discs having extended versions. She would make us play “Let it be love” and “See the Lights” over and over whilst she would tap/slap out the beat – they are great.

Nothing to do with anything musical, I'll say it anyway: has anyone else noticed the likeness of ginger-period Jim Kerr to the Greens' Russell Norman?

I haven't but then I don't know what Jim Kerr looks like.

I don't know what Jim Kerr looks like.
The very idle thought comes from late-night music-channel grazing so I don't know the name of the video to give a hint other than it's one of the well-known songs and he 's got ginger hair and wearing a baggy suit (not that I have ever seen Russell Norman in a baggy suit).
-
Russell Norman always reminds me of Harvey Norman but without the washing machines. Don't know about the baggy suit.

Must be forgettable after all.
Not sure it's ginger hair though. The lighting?
PS. I like them a lot too.

I’ve just been watching a DVD of New Order. Took me back!
On the subject of anachronisms, love today's xkcd.

Wow thanks. Press any button on PA and out comes the answer. That is the video. Maybe you're right about the lighting, or the colour is way gone on our TV (an old 29 inch CRT that has fallen flat on its face three times in the shakes).
I like Simple Minds for their bigness of sound, their swirly melodiousness, and that they seem to be able to play stadiums without being pompous (U2 are very prog-pomp). And the Simples seem to enjoy playing; sometimes you catch them smirking as in "jeez, I can still do it, even with a double chin". Muddle age has made me appreciate that humour.

I also love Simple Minds. And Simply Red. I'm a Simple Girl.

And Simply Red.
I nearly mentioned them but I think they may be a girl thing rather than general interest.

For me, nothing tops their breakout hit:

Hebe,
This one. The best.

The music, it must be said, is mostly pretty poor. Golden Harvest and Schtung sound indifferent
Heh. The guitarist from Schtung came and gave a lunch-time solo concert at my school, around about that time, 78 or 79. Several teachers (all of that generation) told us how this guy was amazing and we just *had* to go...so we did. Cue an hour of the most boring, noodling self-indulgent guitar twiddling you've ever heard in your life. I got a detention by yelling out "so when does it start?" after he finally stopped.

Now that is good.

Loving the Simple Minds love. How about this for some great use of gold foil? And where did mascara for men go, eh?

Are we not men?
That is exactly how I announced the news to my husband. He responded "We are (going to) Devo!"
Simple Minds makes me think of Judd Nelson's capacious nostrils, for which we can blame John Hughes. (I have never heard the early stuff.)
-
As an aside, good old nzhistory.net has documented the rise of NZ rock music festivals (including Redwood 70 which I attended and which seemed huge, but only had 9000 people).

I think you'd like it, actually. There's certainly more to them than that Billy Idol song.

Hebe,
As an aside, does anyone know where I can look at photographs of Sweetwaters 1983?

And before Namabassa was the The Great Ngaruawahia Music Festival
I was there for that one - Corban Simpson ( Dam the Dam ) going naked for the first act - Black Sabbath kicked off with a huge burning cross on the hill that totally freaked out the Christians . Hippies, bikers , lefties , hare krishnas , good vibe with all

( Dam the Dam )
Wasn't that John Hanlon? Came across him working as an adman in Sydney in the mid-90s.

80s suits and growing old, you say..

I had dinner last night with a couple of newish friends, and John had an album playing which was David Byrne and Caetano Veloso. Pretty amazing.

Here’s a couple of scene-setters. Or perhaps the Psychedelic Furs? Over here.
