• Jeremy Eade,

I like Len's Jesus quote. It makes sense and had a pathos to it. Why can't you mention Jesus in that context. People speak like that in the real world......and the Bill Ralston school of big boy media training junket is getting pretty tired. When will the media be people trained?

• Ian MacKay,

Craig:" How to keep your hands clean:

John Key approved the release of the Credit cards. He said little but as expected the MSM really did the work for him.

Jesus Christ, I don't know how John Key and Helen Clark tear themselves away from the more wing-nutty corners of the internet.

The point I was making was that the gun does not have to be fired by the leader. I believe that Mr Key knew the effect that the release of past documents would have on MSM. Like tossing a bone and watching the frenzy as I think is also happening in far off Auckland. (Never thought of my self as a wingnut.)

• Neil Graham,

What sort of unbalanced imbecile would try and peddle such an amateurish farrago of easily verified falsehoods in the expectation they'de be run uncritically in a main stream publication?

You really think that criteria narrows the field?

• Craig Ranapia,

The point I was making was that the gun does not have to be fired by the leader.

My point is that leaders don't run around with firearms as often as you might think. Whatever the Standardistas want to believe, Phil Goff's diary was not the primary consideration in the timing of the release which was well-signalled. And unless Key's an exceptional actor, he sure seemed as surprised and pissed off as anyone by Tim Grosser's mini-bar tab and Phil Heatley's not at all fantastic plastic abuse.

Hell, let's not be naive here. Of course politicians are going to try to influence and direct the news agenda to their liking. That's why Helen Clark hired a very sharp operator in Mike Munro as chief press secretary, and kept him around for a decade. She also worked damn hard to work the media, which she'd be the first to admit was not a comfortable experience. Some people are instinctive "retail" politicians -- Bill Clinton is still a fragging Jedi master at working a rope line and charming the pants off of every hack in a 2 mile radius. Helen Clark and John Key aren't.

But if anyone things the relationship between politician and media is tame bitch and master rather than delicately balanced mutual parasitism is missing something much more interesting.

I don't see our elected reps as parasites, I see them as our elected reps.

Now Caroline Meng-Yee, if we didn't shuffle around like the imperfect mortals we are, she wouldn't have a job.She gets paid to look at us and freak us out about ourselves.

And in CMY's world Len Brown is Jesus, don't worry about explaining policy and programme, just remember the guy thinks he's jesus.

• Lucy Stewart,

If you chose the more experienced candidate, congratulations. You've just chosen Dick Cheney over the incumbent President of the United States. :)

How about: all other things being equal, more experience is better, and when weighting factors it's got to weight pretty strongly - but not everyone will agree on how strongly, and all other things are rarely equal. I mean, I'd hate for you to think experience or lack thereof was the only thing people had against Key as PM. ;)

• Sacha,

This seems relevant when considering a potential Mayor playing their part in managing the organisation's finances.

Figures also show that Mr Banks, who has made a virtue of being frugal with ratepayers' money, has exceeded the mayoral office budget of $570,865 by $41,606 over the past year.

The biggest problem has been temporary staff costs, which jumped from the budget of $10,000 to $88,372, and catering charges, which have gone from $26,006 to $36,691.

delicately balanced mutual parasitism

Anyway who's the host again, to this supposed horde of parasite's?
I'm trying to think of an example of a parasite of a parasite, slightly hindered by a lack of science training.

I'd like to see a ban on using metaphors and analogies by anyone in any form of politics.

It is the perception that counts like believing your sports team is fairly treated or not. Patisanship.

Well, can't say the sight of politicians getting with Team Jesus does much for my pleasure centres either.

• Tom Semmens,

C'mon man jesus isn't all bad.

His policy of free kai moana and bread for all wouldn't go down well with the aspirational middle class.

The whole wine from water thing might upset the powerful anti-liquor vote, and let's face it - kids don't vote in local body elections.

However, that blessed are the cheesemakers thing should get him some $$ from big dairy.

And his general views on LGBT rights should Garner him plenty of MSM support.

NZH: 'I completely forgot about any of that' says Banks.

We're really reaching down into the bottom of the list of things that shouldn't be stories now. $400 in entertainment costs after saying he didn't take a cent? Who cares?

Insert a Craig quote here about wishing Auckland media would delve slightly deeper into local body politics by looking at their records/policies/plans for running a city of 1.4 million people.

I believe he was misquoted or misrepresented on that issue. He hangs with sex workers and lepers, he don't care.

and I was reading about Garner on Brian Edwards site last night. The verbal and physical abuse he gave Chris Carter at an airport and on a plane would have meant instant dismissal in the private secta.

Good fortune for Duncan he's working for subsidised t.v.

Quite. Perhaps we're ready now for some, like, issues.

• Craig Ranapia,

@Jeremy: If I thought Jesus was bad at all, I wouldn't be a devout Catholic would I? I take both my faith and politics very seriously; seriously enough to think that the separation of church and state should apply on the campaign trail as well and there's something rather distasteful about anyone invoking Jesus while they're trying to play a hand of sympathy cards.

ORLY? I'm not Duncan Garner's biggest fan, but in the private sector I think any prudent employer would be wise to tread carefully in sacking anyone on the basis of unsubstantiated (and ultimately unverifiable) gossip. And if Edwards was an employee of mine, I'd be having a free and frank exchange of views on how on-line bitching about co-workers can be injurious to your continued employment.

I have it on good authority that he aided and abetted his fishing industry buddies in exceeding their quotas, and that's before we consider the obviously fiddled receipt for those loaves.

I wouldn't want to look at Jesus's credit card. He'd be toast in the clusterf$$k to the mayoralty.

I suspect that his actions around curing lepers and the physically- and visually-disabled wouldn't go down too well with the doctors, or with the MoH, either. Between the vested interests and the untested nature of his remedies, he'd be in serious do-do.
