  • Tom Beard,

    marijuana's not drugs, it's a leaf

Cue Chris Morris quote: "People say alcohol's a drug. It's not: it;s a drink".

And her dad has revealed what tipped into hard drug use: marriage. Clearly, the authorities should look at banning that.

    Hear hear!

  • Mikaere Curtis,

Really, the Independent is panicking about pot ?

When we lived in London in the mid-90s, the Independent on Sunday was running a campaign to legalise marijuana. They printed an excellent recipe for Chocolate Hash Afghans. They were excellent...

If they'd been soy milkshakes it would have been a dastardly plot to hook kids on meth AND make them gay.

Yes, they've come over all what were we thinking?

Rosie Boycott in the Guardian too. Trouble is, they've been working off anecdotal claims by people with an interest.

The skunk hysteria is the weirdest part. They've convinced themselves that it's some unprecedented super-drug that's melting people's minds.

I presume that to be authentic, you have to use Afghani hash?

Many years ago, the bloke I used to see in Camden Town used to buy in big blocks of Afghani, allegedly trafficked by the mujahadeen fighting the Soviets at the time and stenciled, with winning irony, with a large hammer and sickle.

He'd save the bits with the stencil and charge more for them.

I'd be more inclined to section the people who didn't convince Winehouse that this is a really, really bad idea:

She recently announced that she will be collaborating with the Babyshambles singer Pete Doherty, who is notorious for his drug addiction and run-ins with the law.

Because if you're an addict with an eating disorder - and perhaps even try not being tabloid fodder for a bit - hanging around with Kate Moss' manorexic junkie ex is the way to do it.

    Good grief.

  • Mark Thomas,

    Arnold Schwarzenegger:

He said: "What would you rather have? A politician taking the stuff and not saying, but making the best decisions and improving things? Or a politician who names the drugs he or she has taken but makes lousy decisions for the country?"

The Republican governor, renowned for his green policies, said Washington had not done enough on the environment. "So we pick up the slack and show the rest of the world America is not just Washington. There are 600 mayors in America who have joined the Kyoto treaty. For us, it is very important that America gets back the great reputation it once had."

He said: "I think we have to do everything we can as a country to get out of the Iraq war, and to take a lead on the environment."

hey, he sounds alright - i sort of assumed arnie would be this unilateralist warmongering machinegun toting humvee driving cowboy governator. (although, how do you reconcile the kyoto protocol with driving a humvee?)

I've taken to boring my friends with explanations of how I was wrong about Arnie after all. He's actually been good value as California Governor.

  • Kyle Matthews,

Arnold Schwarzenegger denies using drugs back in the day -- on the basis that marijuana's not drugs, it's a leaf.

That's a great article. I think he's still smoking a bit of leaf based on some of the quotes.

You can hear him saying that though, just like he said "It's not a tumor!" in that kindergarten cop movie. "It's not a drug, it's a leaf!"

  • BenWilson,

Poor Arnie only smoked leaf? Someone should tell him about the flowers.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

if the challenges facing her include bulimia, using pot is quite probably a good thing.

A few years ago I read a news story where research had been done to see if the "munchies" effect of smoking pot could help people with eating disorders, but it didn't seem to have any effect. Possibly because eating disorders and munchies are caused by different parts of the brain.

    Pass the Burger Rings, ow.

  • Ben Austin,

Ahh Camden Town - the first time I went there I stopped at a furniture shop and tapped a table to see if it sounded solid. Tapping table tops in Camden is apparently code for "I am in the market for weed" in that part of town.

While this debate about reclassifying weed is going on Richard Brunstrom, Chief Constable of South Wales called for reform of the current system, saying it was unworkable and akin to the US prohibition regime in terms of effectiveness. So at least the debate isn't one sided I guess

How's Green Cross going on the campaign for medical pot?

I'm still antidope in that - get out my house that stinks you hippy - kind of way & my uncles mental conditions is put down to his heavy pot use.

We have opium derivitives I don't see why pot tea etc is a problem if managed by docs.

  • MikeE,

So does no one have an opinion on the cops bringing over drug experts whose presentations are littered with comments such as:

"Ecstasy goes into the spinal column and cracking the back releases it back into the bloodstream," [Shimabukuro] said.
Source: West Hawaii Today, Published in 2001

Shimabukuro said it takes 20 - 40 seconds to feel the high when ecstasy is taken orally
Source: West Hawaii Today, Published in 2001

"They can give themselves an enema," he said. "They put the liquid form on a tampon and the ecstasy goes directly into the bloodstream."
Source: West Hawaii Today, Published in 2001

"One of the terms they use is 'rolling,'" Shimabukuro said. "They get Tootsie Rolls and let it stay in the sun or melt it until it's soft and pliable then they put ecstasy in the Tootsie Roll and wrap it. Even if they (officials) do cursory searches, they don't find it."
Source: West Hawaii Today, Published in 2001

Or where part of the presentation is based around a well known (and discredited) urban legend?

  • Craig Ranapia,

Well, folks tend to forget you don't get terribly far in California as a Republican running from the theo-con hard-right. If my memory serves Schwarzenegger is the only Republican who holds state-wide office, and the Democrats have held substantial majorities in both houses of the state legislature since 1970. Even by the low standards of American electoral gerrymandering, the last round of redistricting was pretty blatantly worked to protect incumbents of both parties.

  • Paul Campbell,

    Arnie was into steroids ....

as a relatively recently ex-california resident I find him a bit bizarre - he's married to a Kennedy, spouts republican drivel, drives a Hummer, everyone I know thought he'd be a disaster and were quite embarrassed by the whole thing (but then I lived in Berkeley ...)

On the other hand at this point he seems to have more democrat friends in the state govt than republicans (it's been sadly deadlocked as long as I can remember - fighting over what little is left of the pie since prop 13) and seems to piss off and embarrass the national republicans which can't be a bad thing

OTOH, to most of those folks I suspect being a Republican in California or New England means you're only a joint away from turning into a Satan-worshiping lesbian Commie anyway. :)

  • James Green,

Did anyone see Arnie's advice to California's wildfire arsonists to turn themselves in? It rather seemed like he was delivering a movie line, and that there was the real possibility that he might go chase them down himself.

  • Craig Ranapia,

Though when you look at Mitt Romney - who can't tell the same lie about his record as governor of Massachusetts twice in a row - they may have a point. Getting him loaded - and keeping him there - might be a very good thing indeed.

Perhaps. Or maybe it's the tendency of pot to make your pleasures seem more excellent. If you find eating a pleasure, it makes it more so. If you don't, it won't make you eat.

  • Paul Campbell,

Craig: what you say is largely true about elections for national office but california's state govt pretty split between the hardline republicans and the democrats - it's very much a town/country north/south sort of split with some of the rightmost politicians in the country facing of with some of the most lefty (hilarity ensues ...)
