The percentages seem a little misleading to me: 41% on is $14,800 (Maori) is about $6,100, while 31% on $18,600 (Pakeha) is about $5,800. So, the gap has closed $300 rather than 10%. Not to be sniffed at but but also hardly overwhelming.

Fair point. But the relative rate of increase in median Maori income is still markedly greater, and your point becomes less significant as real incomes converge (assuming they continue to do so). As you say, not to be sniffed at.

Meanwhile, you may find his list of gay bands to steer clear of useful
Frankie Goes to Hollywood? Elton John? Melissa Etheridge? Village People?
Who'd've thunk it?
But they missed some obvious ones: Bronski Beat, Cliff Richard...
-
I guess, but 'closing the gap' $300 over four of NZ's most prosperous years - I hope the govt still has its sights set a bit higher than that.
-
I knew Nickleback we're "gay" but not gay!
Actually I would like to withdraw the ! and replace it with (shrug)
And Le Tigre aren't gay they've got that manly keyboardist. And the Eagles of Death Metal wear leather and have thick manly moustaches - SO not gay.

Morrissey (? questionable?)
ROFL! [wipes tears from eyes]
what about Prince.... awfully tight pants going on there.
and the Beatles. you can't convince me lennon and mccartney didn't have a drug-addled fling, "i'd love to turn you on" indeed...

It's just as well Frank Sinatra is dead: I'd like to have seen his reaction to being listed as gay!
BTW, I'd love to comment on the serious stuff, but PS Code of Conduct and all that...

I found this one:
Maori incomes have risen faster than average across the board. The proportion earning at least $70,000 a year has doubled from 1.7 per cent of all Maori in 2001 to 3.4 per cent, while the proportion in the total population rose only from 5.1 per cent to 8.1 per cent.
even less overwhelming. Russell you've put it as doubling, when the total population percentage didn't double. That's great, but if you look at the percentage increases, 1.7 is a lot less of an increase than 3% - slightly over half.
Linking the increase back to the original 1.7% would have meaning to me if there was a strong link between "how many there used to be" and "how many there are now". But there's no strong link there. Maori are continuing to fall behind in this figure, which you've put forward as a positive. Seems to be a negative to me - Maori are increasingly unlikely, relative to the general population, to earn at least that amount of money.
I didn't see what Turia said, but you're probably right about the bigger picture of what she said.
-
Don't forget there's a "Safe Bands" link there too.
-- Oscar Wilde (reformed homosexual)
Shenanigans, dammit! I call shenanigans!
-

If we're going to talk about tight pants, don't forget David Bowie in Labyrinth.
-
And if I had to give advice to homophobic parents, I'd say it's not the "gay bands" you'd have to worry about. If your confused young lad's listening habits include Cher, Barbra Streisand, Kylie and the collected works of Andrew Lloyd Webber, it's time to start praying.
And what's with this "Oscar Wilde (reformed homosexual)" bit? Shurely shome mishtake? (or pisstake, more likely)
-
ok i officially suck at trying to do your funny html! sorry about that.
So Russell are you saying that the Government is succeeding in closing the gaps even after ditching Closing the Gaps?
-
Ok, Bowie is on there already.
I always wonder why so many homophobes are Queen fans. That most enlightened of radio stations, Howracki, certainly thrash them extensively.

Not my wording - it was a quote from the Herald story.
Seems to be a negative to me - Maori are increasingly unlikely, relative to the general population, to earn at least that amount of money.
Depends on how you look at it. In 2001, the rate for the general population was exactly three times that for Maori. Now it's less than 2.5x. Innit?
But I think you're both smacking a straw man around. No one said it was overwhelming. But the trend is encouraging.

In terms of average incomes, I think it is the percentages that are important.
It's possible for someone catching up to to see a gap grow in actual terms (i.e. income for one group could be rising faster - a higher %age increase, but be $300 further away).
However, contrasting the position of Maori with the 'average' as the article and statistics do is a little dishonest. The gap in NZ is not between Maori and the average but between Maori and non-Maori. Raise the average income of Maori to the present average income and there'd still be a gap between Maori and non-Maori.

Hi all,
How anyone could even vaguely NOT instantly see that gay-basher "Danny Davies" is pulling the piss utterly confounds me.
If you're that dumb you'd probably go to war on the say-so of any moron just cause you like his hat or his dog or something... oh, never mind.

1.7:5.1 (or 1:3) vs 3.4:8.1 (or 1:2.7) surely = increasingly LIKELY.
I can't see any problem with any of these figures- albeit given the raw data, I'm sure one could spin things lots of other ways. -
Ahhh- that should be 1: 2.38 - rather better.

Read the bible and you’ll be sure
to enter Heaven. There’s no back door.
Righteous man, get on your knees.
There lies no virtue in sodomy.

Sustain me through the fight

and help me see the light.
You filthy sinners should just let me be

How could anyone see Davies' clips and not think they were satire.
I do realise that it can be hard to tell with the fundy crowd sometimes.
But thanking Andrew Sullivan for getting behind them, the new "CHAPs" program and being born that way with regards to his medical condition.
Plus the cheese music video had comedy show written all over it. -
Tariana appears to been using the reknowned statistical consulatants Coddington & Co.
Firstly, she talks of a growing Maori middle class. The graphs here speak to that.
The NZ middle class if the obvious bump in earnings between 40 and 70k in the top graph. The same bump is not really evident in the Maori figure below it.
More importantly, is that we're talking about medians, so as long as the middle and upper class are under 50% (I'd guess about 28% from the figures), then the Maori middle class aren't masking anything.Next, using these figures 11% of Maori are 15-19, compared to about 7% of the general population, but 18% and 10% of the 15+ population respectively. These people can be paid youth rates, so it's no shock that Maori have a lower median income. (Of course, the income figures could be age adjusted, but it doesn't say that).

But Cindy Lauper was in a film where she portrayed a (presumably) ungodly pyschic. Vibes it was called and the film itself was an abomination unto our Lord.
How could she be safe?
-
it would be great if someone could find a list of all the songs written by cartman in his christian band phase.
i remember one being, "going down on my knees for jesus", or summin.
not to mention the obvious worship of S&M. someone mentioned john safran in another chain, did anyone see his rant about catholic churches? like the set of a marilyn mason video apparently. v.v.funny.

I do realise that it can be hard to tell with the fundy crowd sometimes. And how. When Ted Haggard was outed, people posted pictures of his New Life Church management team. You could hardly hear yourself think for the sound of gaydars going off.
