The awesome Rush response to the Americans United ads. About 1.45 he starts whining about not being invited to Obama's Superbowl party:
Newer Americans United ad ...
Limbaugh's CPAC speech:

I want to be able to customise Stuff so that will render in browser .... I wonder how much QA they did off of windows

Schadenfreude is watching Fox News at anytime now. It becomes strangely addictive to watch and to see how crazy and out of touch these people are. Having said that I did see some of the round the clock coverage that Fox had of Limbaugh, and it wasn’t even comical, it was actually a feeling of “how does anyone at all take this man seriously anymore”.
-
I should add that I have never taken Limbaugh seriously...

Meanwhile, the new Stuff site debuts today
The following error was encountered:
* Access Denied.
A brilliant debut! Unless they're trying to make a statement about the future of the Internet in New Zealand.

On his blog at Wired.com, Bruce Sterling has published the verbatim notes of his somewhat controversial speech at Webstock under the heading What Bruce Sterling Actually Said About Web 2.0 at Webstock 09.
I missed the controversy, but bloody hell, what an astonishing read that was. Thanks for the link.

New Stuff site - not sure I like.
- The ability to drag the lower sections into an order you want is actually quite neat, and the layout of those sections is nice. But it limits that to those lower sections - "above the fold" seems to still be entirely dictated.
- The font usage is off - serif in the heading and sans-serif in the body text is the opposite of recommended design I thought?
- They have reinserted the story you're reading into the articles listed on the right which is great - it always bugged me before that you couldn't see where in the list of articles you were.
- White space is lovely but it doesn't feel like it's been properly used. Whole thing doesn't quite gel yet, perhaps it will in time -

Lots. Can you email me with your problems, browser, platform, ISP etc?
Giovanni - ditto.

Can I make my Stuff experience sportfree and celebless? And I don't want any outrage.
KTHX

serif in the heading and sans-serif in the body text
People tend to support sans body text for screen use, I think because at that kind of resolution serifs and changes in line wieght are unnecessary noise.
It's also been remarked that the person who decided to make links blue did a lot of damage to the readability of the web.

Re Sterling.
I didn't go to Webstock this year, so I missed this "controversy" to which you allude. But reading his notes - do people not get the satire in there? -
Well, you can remove the 'sports' and 'entertainment' sections from the bottom bit.
And I've been using Firefox and "remove it permanently" to cull other sections i don't want, like Puzzles.
But it annoys me that I only get four headlines plus a picture in the entire first screen, and I have to scroll down two pages to get to the main content.
Maybe this will finally be the catalyst for me to install Greasemonkey :-/

But about half the room seemed to be irony-challanged or confused by it.

I not sure I want to customise a newspaper website. It's a bit too much like … a commitment.
Does Google News count as a newspaper website? I was forced to customize it because of the mountain of news, and the default categories being so far from my own interests. But having done that, it has committed me to it a whole lot more than before.

Inside the CPAC'S Exhibition hall. James Hutchens is the founder of the Christian Zionist lobbying group, Kentucky Republican Sen.Jim Bunning is on the advisory board of the Hutchens’ group. Crazy shit..

Can we ban the currency speculators already? I'm actually quite serious about this.
The dollar bounces unpredictably in a USD .40 - .85 range and it hurts the economy in serious ways. Exporters and importers can't plan ahead properly (unless they're able to hedge currency - another expense, and one that's difficult for small businesses). It means that people are more cautious about investing, because what they're about to spend on might suddenly become dramatically cheaper or more expensive, and they would have wasted large amounts of money.
The NZD is one of the 12 most traded currencies in the world - far in excess of the size of NZ economically. Basically, rich men are using our dollar to make money. And we pay the price.

Giovanni - ditto.
Windows XP with Firefox 3.0.1 and TelstraClear. Oh, and I was wearing shorts and a green t-shirt. But it's all working now, even the old DomPost link that earlier today gave me a straight 505 error.

on stuff.co.nz:
Above the fold, I (almost) love it. Clean, clear etc. Not sure I like the image thing on the LHS, but we'll give it a go :)
Below the fold: good, but I dont see the point of the customizations. I can't log in, so I have to customize between both my machines. And I can only hope it'll work on my iphone, which is actually the device is MOST read stuff on!!
stuff: please consider ripping off nzherald's mobile interface. k'thanks.
Actually, I stand corrected. I CAN log in. It just took me a couple of visits to see the login link :)
I'm not sure it's going to stop the guardian calling you a "link site" tho :)
on the mac stuff: even spending the £, I can't justify an upgrade from my 2 year old c2d macbook - even to myself, tho I know if I got one, I'd have to get two....
Nic, who's working on the homepage for bbc.co.uk at the moment. and yes, the irony that it has draggable regions is NOT lost on me :)
-
Oh, and I forgot: Ads? only one MPU? does fairfax have too much money, or does that one placement now command more money 'cos there is only one?
That said, I didn't actually notice the lack of a banner. shows how banner blind I am.
Nice work overall, stuff people :)
-
Giovanni - you changed your shirt?
(thanks for the feedback BTW).

Giovanni - you changed your shirt?
Oh golly, no. It's not the first of the month yet, is it?
-
Nic - the new BBC page is very nice.
I like that the draggable regions are ABOVE the fold too. Happy to have the "top story" bit locked, but being able to go to a single view on a 15" laptop that puts politics, business and technology sections up there alongside it is what Stuff could have done (although I note that those options aren't all available on the BBC one either). It would be great if any of the top-level BBC News sections should be addable as widgets, directly from the section.

Yes - very ouch on the new Mac prices.
Have been waiting for the new model iMacs to replace a 5 year old PowerBook G4, but the price of a 24" iMac just went from approx $2,800 to approx $4,000. And you lose firewire 400 for a gain of a newer video card and larger hard drive. Processor just seems to be a bit speed bumped.
Tempted to leg it down to Magnummac to get one of the 'old' model iMacs before they run out.

I've been mightily tempted to pick up a new MacBook (even just the white shell one) there as they give you a free Airport Extreme or Wireless Keyboard/Mouse set with any MacBook. Given that those are worth $250-odd, that's a pretty sharp deal.
