Yes, Back Benches is in precisely the same boat - 20 eps funded (as opposed to our previous 52 weeks per year, which was nice), and with the election at the end of next year, we could well finish on August 28th (we started later than Media 7 this year) and not restart until July or something so we can run through til November... watch this space.
Best of luck to you and the team in the downtime.

Careful with that axe, you genie...
Can you investigate if Paul Thompson's selection as head of RNZ is part of the preparation for massive change, if not sale?
He was used as an agent of change at Fairfax, if I recall correctly...
Otherwise one hopes his print nous translates to the aural spectrum. -

Funny that. :)

Bugger. Will delay digital TV purchase until in protest.

Isn't July the month before August?! Or did you mean finish in August 2013 and restart July 2014? That's crazy! I'm hoping you can swing NO DOWNTIME for Back Benchers as it is a great show and important portal into NZ politicians personalities.

Story ideas:
1. compare Radio NZ National with Oz ABC Radio National which has a much better range of programs
2. Monopoly of Chinese language radio in Auckland by China Gov and our Gov expressly saying it doesn't want to interfere (Lateline in Oz was considering a story about this in Oz and NZ - not sure if it made it to press)
3. Gradual move in society and media to genetic explanations of behaviour - a move I'm happy with, though not in a simplistic 1:1 relation.
4. probably tangential to M3, but: trademe monopoly and how they undermine their own feedback system (integral to their model)

Would user anger / frustration / sadness expressed to NZ On Air help ? If so what is the best method / place to do it ( eg email address)
Maybe time to start an online petition ? Save Media 3
Do you also have to shop for the TV channel again, for the next series ? Would be nice to have Backbenchers come back on TV3

Really? How so, and what's stopping an alternative?

Minister of Broadcasting to increase their funding some time this decade. There's only some much TV that can be rung out of an amount of funding that is decreasing in real terms.

Try getting hold of a radio licence in auckland and let me know how you go. Also no tradition of Community Radio unlike in Oz, not that I'd want to be like them.
BTW can you set this website to alert you via email when someone comments on a thread?

Good chat on Media 3 on security.
What if we all used just simple encryption for all our communications. Those watching would then have to spend more computer power and time to decipher it all. How deep would we need to go to bring the system to it's knees?

If I don't get up this week's recording (with sore foot and all), I will certainly do so next week, bringing my lovely daughter who will be home from uni.

When they decide to spend over $3m of it on two competing pop 'talent' shows, there's room for improvement.

How is community radio defined? I thought NZ did have a network of community radio stations

I don't mind them spending the money on pop talent shows, they're as worthy of appearing on air as serious drama, kids tv, sport, documentary, news etc.
My only concern is that those shows are likely viable without the funding, so they don't need it.

Hi Russell and Damien,
First. THANKS Russell for a great program Media 7 . Haven't watched since TV7 was killed off by Natz. Damien. How long did it take to realise you were rogered by the Government. The system is designed that way and you don't seem to get it. Voting them in only encourages them. Our public broadcasting is totally stuffed. Much better in Australia.
