there's a fair whack of interesting/ eh? stuff that came out of former Soviet states. Dos-Mukasan were in Kazakhstan - this clip is 26 minutes or so of sorta downbeat surf/ ska (really).
the opening few minutes feature some cool, black and white, narrated footage of the life and times in wherever the hell it was they were living with an odd emphasis on scientific equipment then the party really kicks off at 11.50 mins. a dour bunch but I'm sure they were the life and souls after few fermented yak milks, and check out the venue at 23 and a bit mins, sweet lighting. -
I was on holiday last week and haven't caught up with the original thread, but has anyone pointed out that not everyone adored Bowie in his heyday? For example Burton Cummings of Guess Who. It would be interesting to know if he had a change of heart since writing that song.

To be fair much of what is on that page is fairly easily found on YouTube, and of course the fact that these are are FB embedded means they can’t be more widely shared beyond that site. Hopefully Neil is going to add the handful that are truly lost and rare to You Tube or similar.

Intriguing. Kazakhstan also has an adventurous avant-garde arts scene, I gather.

Great to see that Kiwi producer Finola Dwyer has a movie nominated for three (3) Oscars - Brooklyn - Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Screenplay - Hawkestone Street to Greek Street - what a trip!

Came across an interesting mix this week based on tracks which sample Lyn Collin’s classic song ‘Think’. I say interesting because of the diversity of artists and genres represented, from Sade to Nightmares on Wax to Jamie XX and Squarepusher. no doubt a bunch of hip hop cuts have been left out, D/L button too.

A great pity Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings can't make it south, yet again. However, in their absence, those of here will be served a delicious treat Saturday night at the Wunderbar in the form of the (surprisingly rare) pairing of Delaney Davidson and Aldous Harding.
Delaney as we know can bang out great versions of just about anything that takes his fancy, including Bowie. I recall seeing a cracking version of Starman a few years back at the Wine Cellar which he sung with Steve Abel.

Agreed, but others - like the Reps - are up there already in fairly good quality already (the direct lift from the TVNZ archive version is on NZoS and YouTube). I'm just a little wary too that the likes of Toy Love are being done out of their few cents. It may not be much but in the case of that TL vid I cleared it with the band and with Flying Nun, it was then claimed by them so as to ensure they got whatever was paid. I'd rather that went to them than Mark Zuckerberg as I'm sure most people would.

Someone just let me know that a record shop in Melbourne is selling digital prints of the card set I did for Flying Nun on eBay - possibly from the scan I put on Public Address a while back - doh!
Do I have a leg to stand on asking them to desist or at least fire a percentage off to Flying Nun?
Can't remember if we had a copyright logo on there or not - probably not... -

Lucky I get up early - had to get them to amend the spelling of Glenn Frey's name all through that piece (from Glen Frey) - I feel it's always good form to get the deceased's name spelt correctly...
Sadly it will remain wrong in the cellulose-based hard copy. -

Agree, no matter the artist or whether we really like them or not. Like the spelling Martin Phillipps (correct) vs.Martin Philipps and that printing fiasco for NZ Music Month last year. Fortunately Martin is still with us!
On the Chills and old footage, I recall the footage of their show with the Stones at that venue (Rhumba Bar?) in Victoria St W was reasonable, Flamethower was great, Rachel Phillipps on keys.

lotsa other footage of chills and others at that link too – all filmed and recorded for the Last Rumba album…
the released clip, I went in and helped Chris Knox put this together late one night in the largely unused (at the time) Northern TV editing suite (or a name similar to that) – fun playing with all the overlays and dissolves and colour extremes…
the story time bit was filmed at Summer Street I think.
Damn, I wish I'd kept a diary.... -

A small footnote - the one show I saw at the Rhumba Bar was marred, no doubt deliberately, by the slow intimidating walk-through of a large contingent of uniformed boys in blue. I remember my companion that night whispering that, given the sudden frigid atmosphere, The Chills' name seemed especially appropriate.
There was a great Chris Knox poster featuring The Stones, would love to see that again.

Oh yes, there was many of those 'nights of chill blue' - the Gladstone and Star&Garter were also frequent targets.
Noting in Ian's clips Martyn (with a 'y') Bull on drums, I got nostalgic and dug out Doledrums which features Martin (with an 'i') Kean
I recall Martin Kean was also for a time in Stereolab. They played a show at a long gone cinema (name escapes me) with the Bats ca 1993. He's now a lecturer in Communication at Otago Polytech.I also spotted this 'Funky Dunedin' from 1986.

Probably The Chchch Youth Centre in the old Cinerama (Mayfair) building in Worcester Street (originally Smith's Garage c1908) - Now part of Cathedral Junction
