Hard News: Music: Avantdale is something special

  • Mike O'Connell,

A night not to be missed in Lyttelton - tomorrow Sat 24 November. MEDaL Dave Mulcahy (JPSE, Superette, Cranks , Sexy Animals ), Mark Whyte (Into the Void, Sexy Animals) and John Billows (Renderers, Cranks, The Ether, Dark Matter ) and, after a fairly lengthy absence from live shows, The Terminals play the Wunderbar.

The Terminals I’ve heard are for this set (and a second outing in Dunedin on Dec 1) veering right away from Antiseptic territory - which has dominated the set in recent outings - to knock out favs from the back catalogue including that gem Uncoffined...

Hard to find any MEDaL on-line but...with Superette's Tiger getting the redux /re-release treatment, here's a live recording from the late and lamented King's Arms, Saskatchewan...

Head on over to Bandcamp for the excellent new album ’Little Rapids’ from Blair Parkes and Cardigan Bay
Show some love and buy the album !!

Heck go and get ’Always Running ‘ his solo album as well – you will be well aurally rewarded by both.

Why some of these tracks haven’t been picked up by other radio stations than the Student Radio stations is beyond me… – But worth noting that at least 3 tracks off ’Always Running’ have been top ten songs on those stations – and RDU even put a track on one of their recent limited edition single releases.

  • Roger M,

Tom was having an artist moment when he chose a seated venue, but sitting was kind of a strain

The dilemma of live music venues. With two stuffed knees, standing is not an option so I have had to restrict myself to seated venues, or at least the seated sections within larger venues. Unfortunately this increasingly seems to no longer be an option as all areas now become standing and I can no longer attend.

  • Mike O'Connell, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

He's produced some fantastic stuff recently, eh Ian? As his recent Audioculture profile also shows, that track record goes all the way back to All Fall Down and Creeley to Is Blair planning any live outings? Rarer than Terminals' gigs! I recall that ripper show he did at the Darkroom (late 2015?) - but not much since?

  • Grant McDougall, in reply to Mike O'Connell,

Is Blair planning any live outings?

Mike, I won't go into too much detail, but Blair has had some rather pressing health problems this year, so has to deal with that ahead of other things, etc, unfortunately.

Thanks Grant, and Blair's been in touch. I liked the L.E.D.s - Rumba from We Are the LEDs is a great track ...
