Meanwhile Nelson, which is frankly a cyclists Mecca, isn't quite getting it right...
isn’t quite getting it right…
Hmmm...we had a bike v. wheelchair incident on the Kulim to Fergusson Parks section of this shared 'walkway' in Tauranga a couple of years ago.
The concrete path would have been no wider than that one in Nelson shown in the photo...the poor biker almost ended up in the tide.
He was going way too fast...and looked quite aggrieved that he had to give way to the wheelchair.
Share with care?
Definitely. Seems like there have been a couple of instances on this one with cyclists travelling too fast past walkers as well but it's the absolute minority being used as an excuse for outright banning. Sharing is indeed caring.
This issue is what we will be confronting when the "shared" pathway , currently under construction on our rural road , is finished.
The stupidity of having cyclists on a footpath will only be apparent when the first cyclist swerves onto the adjacent road and is killed by a passing truck doing the legal limit of 100km/Hr.
Cars , trucks , Fonterra tankers , tractors etc exiting properties cannot see cyclists approaching from the left on the shared pathway without first getting the front wheels onto the shared pathway, thus obstructing the racing cyclists who have the right of way.
The road code for exiting traffic says - 'look right; look left ; look right again ; proceed.
No surprise that city councils generally have shit for brains though. No idea!
